Pat Cummins bagged a second consecutive hat-trick in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

On Saturday night at the Arnos Vale Ground in Kingstown, St Vincent, Australia pacer Pat Cummins became the first bowler to take two hat-tricks in ICC T20 World Cup history. The 31-year-old seamer did it in two consecutive matches, against Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

Generally a middle-overs bowler, Cummins has emerged as a death-overs wicket-taker in these games. As was the case during his hat-trick against Bangladesh, this feat against Afghanistan was also spread across two overs. This time, though, he remembered that he was on a hat-trick, unlike how he forgot it against Bangladesh.

On the last ball of the 18th over of Afghanistan’s innings, Cummins dismissed Rashid Khan, caught at long-on by Tim David after Rashid came down the track to hit a six to the lanky Aussie speedster but couldn’t connect his slog.

Then Cummins took wickets on the first two balls of the 20th over. He first had Karim Janat in a similar fashion to Rashid, caught by Tim David at long-on with a slower delivery outside the off-stump. On the next ball, he went a bit short and into the pitch to Gulbadin Naib, who played a pull shot straight to Glenn Maxwell at deep mid-wicket.

There was some disbelief and astonishment on Maxwell’s face as Cummins grabbed his second hat-trick in consecutive games, while the pacer had a huge smile.

Speaking with the broadcasters after his achievement, Cummins said, “Yeah, remembered this one. Crazy to get two in a row after playing 100 plus games for Australia.”

Cummins is the second bowler to take hat-tricks in two consecutive international matches, after Wasim Akram, who did it in consecutive Test matches against Sri Lanka in 1999.
