Pat Cummins became the seventh bowler to take a hat-trick in the men’s T20 World Cup.
Australian seamer Pat Cummins continued on the dream form in his career as he became only the second Australian bowler to take a hat-trick at the men’s ICC T20 World Cup and overall seventh.
On Thursday night at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua, Cummins starred with the ball in Australia’s victory over Bangladesh in their Super 8 clash of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
The right-arm seamer returned with figures of 3/29, all three of his wickets were part of a hat-trick that was spread across the 18th and 20th over of Bangladesh’s innings.
Cummins was wicketless in his first two overs but snapped three wickets on three consecutive deliveries he bowled in his spell in the death overs.
On the fifth ball of the 18th over in Bangladesh’s innings, Cummins had Mahmudullah chopping onto his stumps with a short-of-length delivery. He then had Mahedi Hasan upper-cutting a short delivery straight to Adam Zampa at deep third-man.
Then, on the first ball of the 20th over, he bowled a slower delivery outside the off-stump to Towhid Hridoy. The batter tried going over Josh Hazlewood at short fine leg with a scoop shot, but because of the lack of speed on the ball, Hridoy could only hit it to Hazlewood.
Watch: Pat Cummins’ hat-trick against Bangladesh
Pat Cummins’ hat-trick in the death overs meant Bangladesh were restricted to 140. David Warner and Travis Head’s aggressive opening stand of 65 runs in 6.5 overs put Australia firmly in control of the chase. Warner scored 53 unbeaten runs when rain arrived. After no more play was possible after 11.2 overs, Australia were declared winners by 28 runs via the DLS method.
After bagging the Man of the Match award, Cummins said, “I had no idea (on the hat-trick), then saw when it came up on the screen. Set batter in, playing the innings, you never know how it’ll go about, so that was a big wicket (on Hridoy’s wicket) and happy to have restricted them. Few (hat-tricks) in juniors, never for Australia. Agar and Ellis, on the bench, have hat-tricks, joined their club. It’s pretty awesome to tick that off. Good club to be part of.”
