Australia captain Pat Cummins calls for separate windows for IPL and test cricket

Australian pacer and test captain Pat Cummins expressed his on having separate windows for the Indian Premier League (IPL) and test cricket. Cummins stressed that franchise cricket is considered to be more profitable than international cricket in a few countries.

Under Cummins’ leadershi[, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) reached the IPL final for the first time in 2024 since winning the 2016 edition. Throughout the 2024 season, Cummins’ captaincy was aggressive and this also reflected on his team’s performance, who played very boldly.

However, Hyderabad lost the IPL 2024 final against Shreyas Iyer-led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Chennai. As Australia’s captain, Cummins won the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup last year. The Cummins-led Aussies defeated the Indian cricket team in both ICC finals in 2023.

Franchise cricket is more appealing than international cricket for some: Pat Cummins

Usually, the months of April and May see IPL take place in India. However, the right-arm speedster Cummins thinks that franchise cricket is more lucrative than international cricket in some parts of the world.

“Franchise cricket for some countries is more lucrative, more appealing than international cricket. If I went and played franchise cricket, I could probably be away for a half or a third of the amount we are for Australia,” Cummins said in a video that was played at a summit hosted by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).

The veteran Australian cricketer further added that the Australian side plays test cricket from November to January. However, if there is a specific window for the Indian Premier League, it will be easy for cricketers to make decisions and play both.

“In Australia, you know Test cricket is from November to January and basically no other cricket is going to get in the way of us playing Test cricket then. If we can have specific windows for IPL but then also Test windows, that makes the decision-making for the players a lot easier,” Cummins added.
