Earlier, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi promised that a major step would be taken following Pakistan’s early exit from the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Following poor showing by the Pakistan cricket team at the recently concluded ICC T20 World Cup 2024, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) sacked Abdul Razzaq and Wahab Riaz from their respective positions in the selection committee on July 10. Razzaq was part of the men’s and women’s selection committee, whereas Wahab had the responsibilities of the men’s team.

“The Pakistan Cricket Board … has notified Abdul Razzaq and Wahab Riaz that their services will no longer be required in the national selection committee setup,” the PCB said in a statement.

After removal of Riaz and Razzaq, the remaining five selection committee members are the head coach and captain of the respective format, former cricketers Mohammad Yousuf, Asad Shafiq, and data analyst Bilal Afzal.

In the past four years, the Pakistan Cricket Board has seen six chief selectors, with Wahab, Haroon Rashid, Shahid Afridi, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Wasim, and Misbah-ul-Haq all serving brief stints.

A chief selector might reappointed again in upcoming days

Earlier, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi promised that there would be big changes seen in the selection panel following Pakistan’s early exit from the T20 World Cup in 2024.

After the removal of Wahab and Razzaq, an ESPNCricinfo report stated that a new selection committee will be formed and a chief selector is likely to be appointed.

How Pakistan cricket team performed at ICC T20 World Cup 2024?

The Babar Azam-led Pakistan had a poor campaign at the T20 World Cup 2024 in June. The Men in Green were eliminated from the global tournament after they failed to reach the Super 8 stage of the showpiece event.

In four group stage matches, the Babar-led side just won two games against Ireland and Canada. They suffered crushing defeats at the hands of arch-rivals India and co-hosts United States of America and finished their poor campaign at third position in Group A with four points.
