Phil Salt claims India have changed the landscape of T20I cricket.
England‘s swashbuckling opener Phil Salt has made a bold statement, claiming India are the trendsetters in T20I cricket now. India have maintained their dominance in T20I cricket after winning the ICC T20 World Cup in 2024.
The Men in Blue, under Suryakumar Yadav’s leadership, have not lost any bilateral series. India recently won the T20I Asia Cup, defeating Pakistan thrice in the tournament, including the final. Playing the upcoming T20 World Cup in home conditions, the defending champions will be contenders to lift the title again in 2026.
Phil Salt hails India’s T20 dominance

Reminiscing the victory against India in the semi-final of ICC T20 World Cup 2022, Phil Salt said, “In the World Cup semi-final we won in Australia against India, we were absolutely the trendsetters in the global game, and had been for a few years. The way we played that night was incredible. I was batting at three and didn’t even get in because Alex Hales and Jos Buttler were brutal at the top. They played with such a carefree approach—there was no stopping us that night. That performance was the product of many years of working in the right direction.”
“However, that loss marked a shift in India T20 philosophy that brought them rewards. “But since then, I feel India have made the switch and are now the trendsetters in the global game, leading the pack. That World Cup semi-final in Guyana showed it again. On that day, especially at that venue, they would have taken some serious beating. The landscape is always changing, and hopefully in the not-too-distant future we’ll be back on top,” Salt acknowledged India’s emergence as a destructive force in T20I cricket.
India carry the momentum in T20I cricket
The Men in Blue underwent a transition in T20I cricket during Rohit Sharma’s tenure as a captain. Facing a setback in ICC T20 World Cup 2022, Rohit emphasized changing the mindset and approach in the shortest format of the game and led from the front. He and Rahul Dravid masterminded the end of the trophy drought in international cricket, winning the ICC T20 World Cup after 17 years.
Suryakumar Yadav, backed by Gautam Gambhir, has carried the momentum that India gained when Rohit Sharma was at the helm. Surya has an opportunity to lead India to an ICC title at home. India have won an ICC tournament as hosts only once, in 2011, when MS Dhoni’s team lifted the ICC Cricket World Cup.
What is Phil Salt’s record in T20I cricket?
Phil Salt has so far played 50 T20Is for England, in which, he has scored 1540 runs at a strikerate of 168.12.
When will ICC T20 World Cup 2026 start?
ICC T20 World Cup 2026 will start on February 7, 2026.
