From 2000 to 2024: List of all Player of the Tournament award winners in the ICC U19 World Cup.
ICC U19 World Cup has produced several big talents in world cricket. Every cricket-playing nation has benefited from the tournament as they get a close look at the youngsters and groom them for the future. From Yuvraj Singh, to Shikhar Dhawan to Dewald Brevis and Yashasvi Jaiswal, these names have utilised the platform very well and earned an early call up in their respective senior men’s national squads. All these names have won the Player of the Series award in the ICC U19 World Cup.
The tournament began in 1988 in Australia and then after 10 years in 1998, ICC started organizing mega youth every second year. Player of the Series is one of the special prizes for a player. But in the first two editions of the U19 World Cup played in 1988 and 1998, this award was not given. Let’s have a look at the recipients of Player of the Series award winners in the ICC U19 World Cup history.

1. ICC U19 World Cup 2000 in Sri Lanka | Player of the Series – Yuvraj Singh (India):
Former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh was the first recipient of the Player of the Series award in the ICC U19 World Cup history. Yuvraj Singh played an important role in India’s maiden title win in the tournament history. He scored 203 runs in seven innings for India and picked up 12 wickets in the ICC U19 World Cup 2000. Yuvraj Singh went on to play 402 international matches for India. He even won Player of the Tournament award in ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, where India lifted the title.
2. ICC U19 World Cup 2002 in New Zealand | Player of the Series – Tatenda Taibu (Zimbabwe) :
Former Zimbabwe skipper Tatenda Taibu won the Player of the Series award at U19 World Cup 2002 edition played in New Zealand. Tatenda Taibu played a vital role in Zimbabwe’s campaign in the tournament and he was awarded for his magnificent performance with the bat. Taibu scored 250 runs in eight innings. He also contributed in eight dismissals behind the stumps. Later on, he went on to play 28 tests, 150 ODIs and 17 T20Is for Zimbabwe’s senior men’s team.
3. ICC U19 World Cup 2004 in Bangladesh | Player of the Series – Shikhar Dhawan (India) :
Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan was the leading run-scorer at the ICC U19 World Cup 2004 in Bangladesh. Shikhar Dhawan scored 505 runs in seven innings in the tournament. Shikhar Dhawan’s performance guided India towards semi-finals of the U19 World Cup 2004, but they lost against Pakistan. Dhawan smashed three big centuries in the tournament. He went on to represent senior men’s Indian Cricket Team in 34 tests, 167 ODIs and 68 T20Is.
4. ICC U19 World Cup 2006 in Sri Lanka | Player of the Series – Cheteshwar Pujara (India) :
India played their second finals of the U19 World Cup tournament in 2006, but they failed to overpower Pakistan in the culminating match. India finished as runners-up of the tournament played in Sri Lanka in 2006. Right hand batter Cheteshwar Pujara was the leading run-scorer of the tournament and also won the Player of the Series award. Pujara scored 349 runs in six innings with one century. Pujara later went on to play 103 tests and five ODIs for senior men’s Indian Cricket Team.
5. ICC U19 World Cup 2008 in Malaysia | Player of the Series – Tim Southee (New Zealand) :
New Zealand pacer Tim Southee picked up 17 wickets in five games in the U19 World Cup 2008 played in Malaysia. Tim Southee was second highest wicket-taker of the tournament behind Wayne Parnell. Tim Southee was awarded Player of the Series for his magnificent bowling performance. New Zealand lost against India in the semi-finals. Southee went on to represent New Zealand senior men’s cricket team in 97 tests, 161 ODIs and 122 T20Is. He is still an active cricketer.
6. ICC U19 World Cup 2010 in New Zealand | Player of the Series – Dominic Hendricks (South Africa) :
South African top-order batter Dominic Hendricks won the Player of the Series award at the U19 World Cup 2010 edition played in New Zealand. Dominic Hendricks scored 391 runs in six innings with one century and three half-centuries. Hendricks was also the leading run-scorer of the tournament. South Africa finished fifth as they lost to Sri Lanka in the quarter-final round. Dominic is yet to represent senior men’s South African Cricket Team.
7. ICC U19 World Cup 2012 in Australia | Player of the Series – Will Bosisto (Australia) :
Australian U19 skipper in 2012 William Bosisto led his side to the finals with his outstanding batting performances in knockout games. Australia failed to lift the championship as the lost to India in the title clash. Will Bosisto scored 276 runs in six innings with two half-centuries in the U19 World Cup 2012. Bosisto was awarded the Player of the Series in that edition of the tournament. However, William hasn’t been able to transition into the senior men’s Australian Cricket Team so far.
8. ICC U19 World Cup 2014 in UAE | Player of the Series – Aiden Markram (South Africa) :
Aiden Markram had a terrific U19 World Cup campaign in UAE in 2014 and led his side to a memorable title win. Markram was also the captain of South Africa U19 team in 2014 and scored 370 runs in six innings in the tournament. Markram was awarded the Player of the Series for his brilliance with the bat as well as leadership. South Africa didn’t lose a single game in the 2014 edition. Markram has so far played 37 tests, 68 ODIs and 39 T20Is for South Africa’s senior men’s cricket team.
9. ICC U19 World Cup 2016 in Bangladesh | Player of the Series – Mehidy Hasan Miraz (Bangladesh) :
Bangladesh’s Mehidy Hasan Miraz was awarded the Player of the Series in the 2016 edition of the U19 World Cup played in Bangladesh. Mehidy Hasan Miraz picked up 12 wickets in six games for Bangladesh side in the mega youth event. Bangladesh played in the semi-finals of the tournament, but lost to West Indies. West Indies went on to win the championship. Miraz has so far played 41 tests, 94 ODIs and 25 T20Is.
10. ICC U19 World Cup 2018 in New Zealand | Player of the Series – Shubman Gill (India) :
India won the record-breaking fourth U19 World Cup title in New Zealand in 2018 when they defeated Australia in the finals of the tournament. Gill played a massive part in India’s entire campaign and won the Player of the Series award in the 2018 edition. Shubman Gill scored 372 runs in five innings. He scored one century in the tournament.
11. ICC U19 World Cup 2020 in South Africa | Player of the Series – Yashasvi Jaiswal (India) :
Yashasvi Jaiwal was the leading run-scorer of the U19 World Cup 2020, which was played in South Africa. In 2020 edition, bowlers were having a great tournament, but Jaiswal came out to be the Player of the Series. Jaiswal scored 400 runs in six innings. Jaiswal smashed a century in the tournament. He also top-scored for India in the final with 88 runs, but it wasn’t enough to guide his country to a win in the title clash against Bangladesh.
12. ICC U19 World Cup 2022 in West Indies | Player of the Series – Dewald Brevis (South Africa) :
Dewald Brevis finished as the leading run-scorer of the U19 World Cup 2022 played in West Indies. Brevis earned the tag of ‘Baby AB’ during this event. Brevis went on to score 506 runs in six innings in the tournament and went on to win ‘Player of the Series’ award. Brevis smashed two centuries in the tournament. South Africa lost the quarter-finals to England. Brevis has so far played two T20Is for South Africa’s senior men’s cricket team.
15. ICC U19 World Cup 2024 in South Africa | Player of the Series – Kwena Maphaka (South Africa):
South African bowler Kwena Maphaka won the ‘Player of the Tournament’ award in the ICC U19 World Cup 2024. Left-arm bowler Maphaka played a total of six games in the tournament and picked up 21 wickets. including three 5-wicket hauls. Despite his consistent performance in the tournament, he couldn’t take his team to the finals of the tournament. The hosts South Africa crashed out of the tournament after losing in the semi-finals to India.
