India’s T20I struggles continue in England, and several players are now under pressure

Indian Cricket Team’s struggles in T20I cricket have continued during the ongoing tour of England. After suffering a disappointing series defeat against Ireland, the Men in Blue have once again failed to deliver their best. They have now lost five consecutive T20I matches, a 2-0 whitewash in Ireland and then three defeats in England.

The last and final T20I between England and India will be played on July 11, 2026, at The Rose Bowl in Southampton. England have already won the five-match T20I series by 3-0, and now, they will be looking for whitewash, while India will be trying to end the series on a positive note after having a terrible performance.

The defeats have exposed several weaknesses in India’s batting and bowling departments. While a few young players have shown good intent, others have failed to grab their opportunities despite having good backing from the management.

With the 2026 Asian Games and the next T20 World Cup cycle approaching, the team management may have to make some bold selection decisions. The focus could shift towards building a more settled squad instead of repeatedly backing players who have struggled for a long period.

Here are three players team could consider moving on from in their T20I side.

3. Washington Sundar

Washington Sundar has been a decent all-rounder for the team over the years, especially with the ball. His ability to bowl economical overs in the powerplay has often helped the team. However, he has struggled to get going with bat and ball in recent times.

India currently need more batting all-rounders, especially after the collapse of the batting department in both the Ireland and England tours. Sundar has struggled to make a consistent impact with the bat, and his strike rate has often been below what is expected from a lower-middle-order batter.

He was given opportunity in the 4th ENG vs IND T20I, but was taken to cleaners. The all-rounder doesn’t fit in team’s T20I plans, and there are chances that he might get dropped.

2. Prasidh Krishna

Prasidh Krishna has decent numbers in the IPL and also impressed in Intentional cricket on multiple occasions. However, he has not been able to replicate the same performances consistently in most of the games.

Krishna struggled with consistency and has often leaked runs during the crucial phase of the innings. His economy rate in T20Is still remains a concern for the team, especially when India already have several quality fast bowlers competing for the same spot.

1. Tilak Varma

Tilak Varma might be a little surprising name on this list, but the left-handed batter is India’s T20I vice-captain, and he is one of the continent’s brightest young talents. However, leadership alone cannot guarantee a place in the playing XI.

During the Ireland and England series, Tilak struggled to score freely in the middle overs and failed to convert his start into an impactful innings, which he is usually known for in the past years.

Meanwhile, players like Sanju Samson are waiting for a position in the playing XI despite performing well in the T20 World Cup 2026 and the IPL 2026. India also have several middle-order options who can provide greater flexibility.

Why is Tilak Varma under pressure in India’s T20I team?

Tilak Varma struggled to score runs during the England T20I series and failed to make a significant impact in the middle order.

When is the fifth T20I between India and England?

The fifth T20I will be played on July 11, 2026, at The Rose Bowl in Southampton.
