New Zealand defeated Sri Lanka by 61 runs in the Super 8 Round to inch closer to the semi-finals.

Sri Lanka were knocked out of the T20 World Cup 2026 after losing to New Zealand on February 25. They lost the clash by 61 runs at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. The Dasun Shanaka & Co. have been eliminated from the race to the semi-finals despite one more game left to play.

Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bowl first in the match. They did a spectacular job in bowling at the start, reducing the Black Caps to 84/6 at one stage. However, New Zealand skipper Mitchell Santner (47 off 26) and Cole McConchie (31* off 23) did a superb job towards the end, taking the scoreboard to 168/7.

While Sri Lanka were expected to dominate in the chase with the home advantage and a strong set of batters, their batting collapsed like a house of cards. They lost their in-form opener Pathum Nissanka for a golden duck in the first over.

Key batters like Kusal Mendis (11), Charith Asalanka (5), and Pavan Rathnayake (10) also lost their wickets cheaply. Rachin Ravindra clinched a four-wicket haul as Sri Lanka ended with 107/8 on the scoreboard.

In Group 1, the West Indies occupy the top spot in the points table with two points and a Net Run Rate (NRR) of +5.350. South Africa are next with an equal two points but a lesser NRR of +3.800. India and Zimbabwe follow in the next two places with 0 points.

England, who have qualified for the semi-finals, grab the top spot in Group 2 with four points. New Zealand now occupy the second place with three points, followed by Pakistan with one point. Sri Lanka are at the bottom with 0 points and have been eliminated from the tournament.
