Prithvi Shaw had represented Mumbai in Indian domestic cricket since his debut.

According to a press release issued by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) on Monday, July 7, Indian cricketer Prithvi Shaw, who has played domestic cricket for Mumbai, has relocated to Maharashtra.

Shaw received a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Mumbai’s cricket governing association on Monday after telling the board that he wanted to play as a “professional” for a different state.

“The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) would like to inform that cricketer Prithvi Shaw had formally requested a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to represent another state as a professional player in the upcoming domestic season. After due consideration, the MCA has granted the NOC,” the MCA said in a statement.

The 25-year-old had accumulated over 4500 runs in his career and 13 hundreds in First-Class (FC) cricket. In addition, Shaw has played in five test matches, six ODIs, and one T20I for India.

Prithvi Shaw joins Ruturaj Gaikwad in the Maharashtra team

Shaw, who is in dire need of some help to resurrect his career, sees Maharashtra as the way to bring himself back in India and IPL contention. He thanked the MCA for the opportunities and said he was grateful to the Maharashtra team for giving him a chance.

At this stage of my career, I believe joining the Maharashtra team will help me grow further as a cricketer. I am deeply grateful to the Mumbai Cricket Association for the opportunities and support I have received over the years. Maharashtra Cricket Association has made remarkable efforts in recent years to enhance cricketing infrastructure across the state,” said Shaw as quoted by PTI.

Initiatives like the Maharashtra Premier League, Women’s MPL, Corporate Shield, and D.B. Deodhar Tournament are testament to their vision. I’m confident that being part of such a progressive setup will positively impact my journey as a cricketer. I’m happy to get the opportunity to play alongside talented players like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ankit Bawne, Rahul Tripathi, Rajneesh Gurbani, and Mukesh Choudhary in the Maharashtra team,” Shaw added.

MCA chief Rohit Pawar welcomed Prithvi Shaw into the Maharashtra fold and stated that Shaw’s experience with the Mumbai team and the Indian team was vital for Maharashtra.

“We are delighted to welcome a player of Prithvi Shaw’s calibre to the Maharashtra team. His inclusion adds tremendous strength to an already talented squad comprising experienced players like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ankit Bawne, Rahul Tripathi, Mukesh Choudhary, and Rajneesh Gurbani,” said MCA president Rohit Pawar.

Shaw’s international and IPL experience will be invaluable, especially for mentoring younger players in the squad. I extend my heartfelt thanks to the MCA Apex Council and the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) for supporting this decision. Maharashtra Cricket Association stands firmly behind Prithvi in his new journey, and we wish him the very best for the seasons ahead,” he added.

Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad is expected to lead Shaw in Maharashtra state team. They were eliminated from group stage in the Ranji Trophy last season after winning only two of their seven straight games. They were eliminated in the first round of the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy 2024-25 after managing to win only three games in the group stage.

However, Maharashtra had a great run and won their group in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25 before losing to Vidarbha in the semi-final.
