IPL 2023: “Prithvi Shaw can’t keep going on reputation”- Michael Vaughan says DC batter needs a big innings
Prithvi Shaw's IPL scores this IPL 2023 season have been 12, 7, 0, 1, and 13.
Michael Vaughan, the former England captain, expressed concern and displeasure for Delhi Capitals' (DC) opener Prithvi Shaw, saying that the right-hander cannot continue to play based on his prior performances and must score heavily in order to return the team's faith in him.
Prithvi Shaw's IPL scores this IPL 2023 season have been 12, 7, 0, 1, and 13, but the DC team has supported the young opener. Although Shaw's aggressive powerplay batting has helped the Delhi Capitals in the past few seasons, Shaw has completely lost all of his form and confidence in recent years.
Speaking on the Cricbuzz Vaughan said:“I think he needs a big innings. He needs some runs. He can’t keep going on reputation. He can’t keep going with what is done in the past. He needs to produce the runs here and now. He has got a poor start. He has not gotten out of Powerplay yet with the bat in hand yet. Early in the tournament, Mark Wood bowled him. His feet went nowhere. It was like he was waiting for the short ball and he was nowhere near the line or the pitch of the ball.”
Shaw failed to come good in DC’s chase of 128 against KKR and Vaughan had said: “It was a good opportunity for the 23-year-old to get back into form, “It is a target that won’t intimidate you as a batter you are not looking at 190s. There is no real pressure in terms of the scoring rate. I think he comes out plays the way he has done in the past but he needs to be there at the end of the sixth. He has to see his team home and 60-70 not out if he can be.”
The young right-hander once again fell early in the powerplay to the spin of Varun Chakravarthy after scoring 13.
Virender Sehwag wants Prithvi Shaw to take inspiration from Shubman Gill
Prior to Vaughan, Virender Sehwag, a former India captain, had criticised Prithvi Shaw for his subpar batting. Shaw is not learning from his mistakes, according to Sehwag, who claimed this after Shaw's tame dismissal in the Delhi Capitals vs. Gujarat Titans game.
Sehwag further added that Shubman Gill, who led India to victory at the 2018 U19 World Cup when Shaw served as captain, has fantastically developed and is now a mainstay for the Indian team in all three forms, but Shaw is still getting dismissed in the same way, according to him.
Sehwag said on Cricbuzz, “He has been dismissed playing those kinds of shots so many times…but he should also learn from his mistakes, right? Look at Shubman Gill, who played U-19 cricket with him and is now playing Test, ODIs and T20Is for India, but Shaw is still struggling in IPL.”
“He has to make the most of this IPL platform and score runs. Ruturaj Gaikwad scored 600-odd runs in an IPL season. Shubman Gill also scored big runs. So even Shaw has to be consistent with his IPL scores,” he added.
It remains to be seen whether DC continue with Prithvi Shaw in the XI when they next face Sunrisers Hyderabad in Hyderabad on April 24.
