Punjab Kings part ways with Sanjay Bangar and Trevor Bayliss ahead of IPL 2025 season

Punjab Kings have roped in Ricky Ponting as their new head coach for the IPL 2025 edition.

Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Punjab Kings (PBKS) have let go of head coach Trevor Bayliss and head of cricket development Sanjay Bangar ahead of the IPL 2025.

This development comes after Australian legend Ricky Ponting was roped in as the new head coach by PBKS earlier this month.

Bayliss and Bangar had joined PBKS after IPL 2022. During their tenures, the Kings performed disappointingly, as they finished eighth in IPL 2023 and ninth in IPL 2024.

Bangar had also served as the head coach of the Punjab-based franchise from IPL 2014 to 2016. Bayliss had replaced former India spinner Anil Kumble, who was the PBKS head coach from IPL 2020 to 2022.

So far, Punjab has ridden through several coaches in the last decade in order to end their IPL drought. Before Kumble, the Kings appointed four coaches in four seasons: Sanjay Bangar (2014-16), Virender Sehwag (2017), Brad Hodge (2018), and Mike Hesson (2019).

According to a report in ESPNCricinfo, the decision to remove Trevor Bayliss and Sanjay Bangar was taken recently by the franchise board on which the four co-owners sit.

Meanwhile, Shikhar Dhawan, who captained the PBKS in the IPL 2024 edition, has retired from international, domestic, and IPL cricket.

How did the Punjab Kings perform in the IPL 2024 edition?

PBKS had a dismal run in the IPL 2024 edition. They won five games out of 14 league stage matches. Punjab finished ninth with 10 points to their name.

With Australian coach Ricky Ponting becoming the new head coach of Punjab, the franchise would be hoping to end their IPL trophy drought in the IPL 2025 season.
