R Ashwin dropped massive hint in a video posted on his YouTube channel.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises have already started working behind the scenes ahead of the IPL 2027 season. Although the next season is still some time away, discussions around player trades, coaching changes and team rebuilding have already grabbed attention.

After having poor performances in the past few seasons, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are looking for a major squad change. After Stephen Fleming ended his long and successful association with the franchise, speculation has continued over who will replace one of the most successful coaches in IPL history.

Now, former India spinner R Ashwin has added a new twist to the story by naming England’s 2019 ODI World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan as a strong contender for the role.

Ashwin, who has played for CSK during his IPL career, shared his thoughts on his YouTube channel. According to him, Morgan’s name is strongly linked with the coaching vacancy, and any decision could arrive very soon.

The suggestion came as a surprise because Eoin Morgan has never worked as a head coach in international or franchise cricket. Since retiring from professional cricket, the former England captain has mainly been involved in commentary and broadcasting.

Despite that, Ashwin believed Morgan’s leadership qualities could make him a suitable option for five-time champions.

“I have a strong hunch. Eoin Morgan’s name is strongly linked to the CSK head coach role, per my sources. I think a decision will be made in the next week,” Ashwin said.

Morgan may not have coaching experience, but his record as a captain speaks for itself. He completely changed England’s approach to white-ball cricket and led the team to its first-ever ODI World Cup title in 2019.

He also guided Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the IPL 2021 final as captain and got praised for his tactical thinking and calm leadership. These qualities could help a CSK side that is entering a new phase after missing the IPL playoffs in the last three seasons.

MS Dhoni still remains an option – R Ashwin

Interestingly, Ashwin also feels franchise may not rush into appointing a permanent coach. Instead, he believed MS Dhoni could guide the team for one season while the franchise prepares for the next mega auction cycle.

“Personally, I feel this will go to MS Dhoni and be run by the others. I think that will be the right decision because appointing a replacement for Fleming is a touch late with the mega auction just a year away.”

Who did R Ashwin suggest as Chennai Super Kings’ next head coach?

R Ashwin suggested former England captain Eoin Morgan as a strong contender to replace Stephen Fleming as Chennai Super Kings’ head coach.

Is MS Dhoni also in contention for the Chennai Super Kings head coach role?

Yes. R Ashwin believes MS Dhoni could oversee the team for one season before a permanent head coach is appointed.
