R Ashwin further said that at one stage money doesn’t matter for some players.
Veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has opined about ICC T20 World Cup 2024-winning captain Rohit Sharma’s future in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with the five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI).
Ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, there is a huge buzz surrounding Rohit Sharma, who is in the twilight of his career. The debate is over whether the 37-year-old will continue with the Mumbai franchise or the five-time champions will release Rohit.
In IPL 2024, Rohit played under all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who was traded from the Gujarat Titans to Mumbai ahead of last year’s auction and was instantly appointed the skipper, replacing Sharma.
The Hardik-led MI had a shambolic season as they finished at the bottom of the points table with just four victories in 14 league stage matches.
After a stage, money doesn’t matter for some players: R Ashwin
Indian cricket team off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin feels that Rohit will remain with the Mumbai-based franchise for the IPL 2025 edition. Ashwin further added that for some players like Rohit, money doesn’t matter anymore and they just want to play happily.
“Even if you think like Rohit, it’s not wrong at all. ‘I don’t want any headache. I have been a captain for India. I have captained Mumbai many times. Even if I am not a captain, I am going to Mumbai happily. If I play for Mumbai, it’s super’. I am sure most players are like that. After a stage, money doesn’t matter for some of those players. That’s the thing,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel, as quoted by ANI.
The 37-year-old Rohit had a decent run with the bat in the IPL 2024 season. The Mumbai opener played 14 league-stage matches and scored 417 runs at a good strike rate of 150. Rohit also scored one century and one half-century in the 2024 season.
