"If everything goes well..." Ex-fielding coach R Sridhar on whether Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli could play in World Cup 2027

R Sridhar is confident that both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli could feature in the next ODI World Cup.
Former India fielding coach R Sridhar is optimistic about the chances of both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli featuring in the next ODI World Cup, which will be hosted by South Africa in 2027.
The dream of India captain Rohit to lift the ODI World Cup trophy and of Kohli to win the ODI silverware for the second time in his care was shattered on November 19 last year in Ahmedabad when India lost the ODI World Cup 2024 final to Australia.
Both of them did win an ICC trophy this year – the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 – and retired from T20Is. Their next targets are the Champions Trophy 2025 and the World Test Championship final 2025.
Recently, new head coach Gautam Gambhir affirmed that should both the players keep their fitness, they could play in the 2027 World Cup. Rohit is currently 37 years old – so for him, the 2027 World Cup seems a distant dream – but Kohli is 35 and with his fitness, he is more likely to survive till 2027 than Rohit.
R Sridhar gives his take on Rohit Sharma and Kohli
Sridhar, who worked extensively with both Rohit and Kohli, believes both of them could have another shot at the ODI World Cup trophy in 2027.
Sridhar joined KhelNow in an exclusive chat organized by Sony Sports Network, the official broadcasters of India’s tour of Sri Lanka 2024 in India.
He said, “I do see them playing in the next ODI World Cup in South Africa, unless something really unfortunate happens. If everything goes well, I hope they play because they bring in so much experience and value. I wish they are fit and in good shape.
He added, “But it is a long way away and it’s too early to speculate. So we will enjoy every match they play; enjoy while they are there.”
