Shreyas Iyer must be disappointed after missing out on Asia Cup 2025 squad, feels Ajinkya Rahane.
Discarded Indian batter Ajinkya Rahane has said that Shreyas Iyer should get proper communication from the selectors following his snub from India‘s squad for Asia Cup 2025. Notably, Iyer’s omission from Asia Cup 2025 squad raised a lot of eyebrows.
Iyer was phenomenal in this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL). He not only led Punjab Kings (PBKS) to the final, but also scored over 600 runs at an average of 50.33 and a strike rate of 175.07 in 17 games.
After his outstanding show in the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year, where he was India’s highest run-scorer, and in IPL 2025, he was expected to earn a spot in India squad for Asia Cup 2025. However, chief selector Ajit Agarkar said that Iyer is not at fault, but there’s no space left in the current T20I setup.

Shreyas Iyer should get proper communication from selectors: Ajinkya Rahane
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Rahane said that Iyer must be disappointed for getting snubbed from India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad despite his brilliant show in IPL 2025. Rahane also added that the selectors should have proper communication with Iyer as he is going to be part T20 format in future.
“I’m sure he (Shreyas Iyer) must be really disappointed considering the kind of IPL he had. It was a fantastic season. Even in domestic cricket, especially in the 50-over format, he has performed really well whenever given opportunities. I can completely understand the team management’s point of view, since they can only pick 15 players and need to see the balance of the team,” he said.
“The only thing I want to see and I want to know is that a proper communication from selectors and team management with Shreyas. He’s an important member of the team and I’m sure in the coming years or in the future he’s going to be part of the T20 format as well. So communication is the key from the selectors to Shreyas Iyer,” he added.
Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav is set to lead India in Asia Cup 2025. Shubman Gill has been appointed as the vice-captain of the team, making his return to the shortest format after more than a year.
Asia Cup 2025 will commence on September 9 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). India are part of Group A alongside Pakistan, UAE, and Oman in their pool. India will clash with the UAE in their opening game on September 10 in Dubai.
