Rahul Dravid’s tenure as India head coach concluded after India winning ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
Former Indian cricket team head coach Rahul Dravid has expressed his thoughts on his aggressive celebration after lifting the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 trophy in June.
The Rohit Sharma-led India won the thrilling grand finale against South Africa by seven runs, which was played in Barbados on June 29. The historic victory ended India’s 11-year-long wait for an ICC title.
Team India also won their second T20 World Cup title, having won the inaugural edition in 2007. Rohit Sharma became the second Men in Blue skipper after MS Dhoni to win the ICC T20 world title.
You don’t plan these: Rahul Dravid about his animated celebration
Legendary cricketer Rahul Dravid had a forgettable ICC ODI World Cup 2007 in the West Indies. In the 2007 edition of the ODI World Cup, the Dravid-led India suffered group-stage exit after losing to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
After 17 years, Dravid buried those horrific moments in the West Indies when he guided Team India to the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 victory in Barbados as the head coach.
After winning the T20 World Cup 2024, Dravid was seen getting emotional. At the time of the trophy celebration, the legendary cricketer was seen celebrating aggressively with the trophy. That brief clip of Dravid’s celebration surprised everyone.
Reacting to his animated celebration, Dravid expressed that he didn’t plan it. The former Indian head coach further added that he tried to keep his emotions to himself but couldn’t resist celebrating.
“You don’t plan these things. In most times, I try to keep my emotions in check as a coach and you are expected to do that. But at that time, I felt really happy for the team. I felt happy for the boys. I felt happy for the support staff. So many people who had worked really hard along with me,” Dravid told Star Sports.
Not able to cross the line: Rahul Dravid on losing WTC and ODI World Cup final in 2023
During Dravid’s tenure, the Indian cricket team played two consecutive ICC finals in 2023, in the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup. However, the Indian side suffered heartbreaking defeats in both finals against Australia.
Dravid also shed light regarding failing to win two consecutive ICC titles in 2023 despite reaching the final.
“We were just not able to cross the line in those critical moments. In those situations you need a little bit of luck, a little bit of destiny to work your way and that day it was with us,” Dravid added.
