Rahul Dravid said that Indian players are humble about their work ethics.
Legendary cricketer Rahul Dravid‘s tenure with the Indian cricket team as head coach came to an end on a memorable note in June 2024. Dravid’s last assignment as the coach saw India ending their 11-year-long wait for an ICC trophy by lifting the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 title in Barbados.
The Rohit Sharma-led side defeated South Africa in the grand finale by seven runs on June 29, which also ended India’s 17-year-long wait for the ICC T20 World Cup. Previously, under the leadership of MS Dhoni, the Men in Blue won the T20 World Cup in 2007.
After clinching the T20 World Cup trophy, senior Indian cricketers Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja announced their international retirements from the shortest format.
Rohit Sharma was a fantastic leader: Rahul Dravid
Dravid’s tenure with the Indian side started in November 2021. During his stint, India played three consecutive ICC finals across all three formats.
India played in the World Test Championship and ODI World Cup finals in 2023. However, they lost both the summit clashes against Australia.
The Men in Blue also reached the finale of the T20 World Cup 2024 and this time emerged victorious. Apart from three ICC finals, Dravid also helped the Indian cricket team lift the Asia Cup 2023 trophy in Sri Lanka.
During a recent interview on Star Sports, Dravid opened up about his time with the Indian cricket team and hailed skipper Rohit, who continues to lead in the other two formats.
Dravid said that it was a privilege to work with Rohit, and he called him a ‘fantastic leader’. The legendary cricketer also heaped praise on other senior players like Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, and Ravichandran Ashwin for their work ethics.
“I can’t completely take all the credit. I believe the teams are really led by a group of senior players, led by the captain, so I think… It was a privilege to work with Rohit in these two and a half years. He was a fantastic leader. People really gravitate towards him. I think that makes a lot of difference,” Dravid said.
“There are a lot of other senior players as well. Whether it was Virat (Kohli), Bumrah, or Ashwin in Test cricket that we played, so many of them,” Dravid added.
Lots of credit to the captain and senior players: Dravid
The former India head coach further added that the Indian players are humble in their preparations and work ethics and there is no complacency in them.
“So many people sometimes think that they have big egos and are, you know, very difficult to manage, but actually I think it’s just the opposite. You know a lot of these superstars are actually very humble about their preparation; they’re humble about their work ethic, and that is why they are superstars.
“It was a privilege and a pleasure to work with some of these guys, and I’m happy we were able to create a good environment, but a lot of the credit must go to the captain and the senior people who, to be honest, actually drive a team,” Dravid added.
