Rahul Dravid opts out of re-applying for head coach role, wants to spend time with family - Reports

Rahul Dravid’s tenure as India’s head coach will end after the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

Rahul Dravid, the outgoing Indian team head coach has reportedly opted out of reapplying for the same. This comes after BCCI had recently put on an advertisement for the post of Team India head coach on their website and social media.

Rahul Dravid’s tenure had come to an end after the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in November, but the BCCI, owing to not having any alternate, convinced Dravid and his team of support staff to extend their tenures for one more year given the T20 World Cup 2024 in mind.

Now that the extended tenure of Rahul Dravid, batting coach Vikram Rathour, and bowling coach Paras Mhambrey will come to an end in June after the T20 World Cup 2024. BCCI has begun the hunt for the next Indian team head coach.

As the Hindu report, Rahul Dravid has relayed to the BCCI that he will not re-apply for the post of the Indian team head coach. He had done so in well advance about seeking no further extension due to personal reasons.

VVS Laxman is reportedly not in the fray for the head coach role of the Indian team

Dravid is said to have told the BCCI hierarchy of his intention to spend time with his family even before the IPL began in March. The BCCI announced on Monday night that applications for the position of head coach would be accepted until May 27.

If Dravid had agreed, the BCCI may have contemplated having separate coaches for limited-overs and test cricket. However, as Shah revealed last week, there would be only one head coach across all formats, with his tenure lasting until the end of 2027.

More so, contrary to expectations, V.V.S. Laxman, the head of the National Cricket Academy, is also unlikely to participate.

It may push the BCCI to hunt for a foreign coach after consulting with senior players. Feelers have been sent to a couple of IPL franchise head coaches who have been with the T20 competition for a long period. So far, none of them have expressed a readiness to apply for the position.
