Rahul Dravid had received contract extension after his term ended in November 2023.

Rahul Dravid’s term as head coach of the Indian team is coming to an end in June and the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah has revealed that the board will invite applications for the new head coach soon.

The BCCI will not make the same error it did last year by inviting applicants for the position of head coach after the previous coach’s stint had finished. With little time left for the next major task, outgoing coach Rahul Dravid was persuaded to accept an extension until the T20 World Cup in June.

This time, applications will be accepted even before the team departs for the T20 World Cup. If Dravid wants to continue, he will need to reapply.

“We will call for applications in the next few days. Rahul Dravid’s tenure is coming to an end in June. If he wants to re-apply, he can,” Jay Shah was quoted by ESPNCricinfo.

Dravid, who had a two-year contract, was offered an extension, along with his support staff, following the conclusion of the ODI World Cup in November last year. The team of assistant coaches for batting, bowling, and fielding will be finalized once the new coach is hired and consulted.

“I can’t interfere”- Jay Shah on whether BCCI will seek a foreign coach for the Indian team

Jay Shah announced that the new head coach will be granted the position till the ODI World Cup in 2027. The remaining backroom personnel will be appointed in consultation with the incoming head coach. Shah stated that India is unlikely to split coaching roles based on format.

“We are looking for a long-term coach for three years. There is no precedent of different coaches for different formats in Indian cricket. Besides, we have a number of all-format players. Ultimately, it will be the Cricket Advisory Committee’s (CAC) call. I have to implement what they decide,” Shah added.

Shah stated that the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) will decide whether to hire a foreign coach for the position. “If the CAC selects a foreign coach, I can’t interfere,” Shah said.

The BCCI secretary also revealed that a few candidates have already been interviewed for the vacant post of one national selector. This selector is expected to replace Salil Ankola, the second member of the selection committee from the west zone. The new member is expected to be from the northern zone.

“A few interviews for the selector’s post have already happened. The CAC will meet in a week’s time to finalize the name, and we will announce it soon,” Shah said.
