Ravi Ashwin believes Gautam Gambhir has left his imprint on the Indian team in white ball cricket.

Former Indian cricketer Ravi Ashwin has made some interesting comments about Gautam Gambhir and his stint as India coach in a conversation with former South African cricketer AB de Villiers. The two discussed the recently concluded test series between India and South Africa, discussing the future and impact of Gautam Gambhir at the helm of the Indian team.

When Gambhir is under severe scrutiny for failing to protect India’s fortress at home in test cricket, Ashwin has decided not to succumb to the emotions and objectively analyse Gambhir’s coaching stint. The off-spin great has highlighted the transition that the team is undergoing in Gambhir’s tenure, and it is working for India, believes Ashwin.

“I think GG, the white-ball coach, has already left a bit of a stamp,” said Ashwin, making a bold statement. According to him, India have become more intimidating in white ball cricket, particularly in T20 cricket. Ashwin believes Gambhir has led India towards a more proactive approach.

Ashwin said India are adopting a more fearless brand of cricket. However, from a critical standpoint, it is important to observe whether this change actually started under Gambhir’s reign. The current Indian head coach has indeed laid emphasis on being fearless, but one would believe the real shift in mindset started under the leadership of Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma, post ICC T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia.

Ravi Ashwin has talked about the instrumental role Gautam is playing in the T20 setup for India. He has referred to players like Abhishek Sharma as the flag-bearers of Gautam Gambhir’s fearless brand of cricket in the shortest format of the game.

Discussing the role of Abhishek, Ashwin remarked, “That’s one cricketer I would love to watch out for again in the T20 format. His exploits around the format will dictate where India go in the T20 World Cup.” Abhishek has been the most consistent performer for India in the last few months with his no-nonsense attacking style in the shortest format.

Gautam Gambhir will remain India’s coach until?

Gautam Gambhir has been appointed as the coach for a tenure that will last until the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup.
