Ravi Ashwin retired mid-way through the five-test series in Australia.

Ravi Ashwin has opened up on his thoughts in the lead-up to his official retirement announcement.

The 38-year-old returned to his residence in Chennai on Thursday morning after retiring from international cricket on Wednesday in Brisbane, following the conclusion of the third BGT 2024-25 test that ended in a draw amid heavy rain.

Ashwin received a grand welcome in Chennai at his home by friends and family members with flower garlands and a band playing traditional music.

Ravi Ashwin talks about the “clear indication” of retirement

He was asked if announcing retirement was a difficult decision. The off-spinner said it was very emotional but now felt relieved.

Ashwin revealed that the thought of retirement had been on his mind for a while. He felt more of it on day 4 of the Brisbane test and decided to announce it on day 5.

“It’s not. It’s emotional for a lot of people. It will be emotional, maybe it will sink in. But for me, it’s a great sense of relief and satisfaction…It had been running in my head for a while but it was very instinctive. I felt it on day 4 and called it on day 5,” Ravi Ashwin told ANI.

“To be honest, we all go through a lot in our career, not only for cricketers but in general. Generally, when I go to sleep I remember a lot of things like taking wickets, making runs, but those memories are not there in the last two years. So, that was a clear indication that we need to take a different route now. I have not set any new goals, as I just want to relax now. Actually, it’s difficult for me to stay inactive, but I want to try that now,” he added.

While he has retired from international cricket, Ashwin could be seen playing domestic cricket for Tamil Nadu. He is also set to feature in the IPL 2025 after being bought by CSK for INR INR 9.75 crore in the mega auction.
