MS Dhoni retired from test cricket during the 2014/15 tour of Australia.

Following Ravi Ashwin’s sudden retirement after the third BGT 2024-25 test in Brisbane, former India head coach Ravi Shastri has lifted the lid on MS Dhoni’s unexpected retirement from test cricket in the dressing room during the BGT 2014/15 in Australia.

Dhoni shocked the world when he retired after the third test of the series, with one more match to go. Dhoni had also hadn’t mentioned his retirement plans in the post-match press conference, making his decision even more shocking.

The announcement was made through a press release from the BCCI, citing “the strain of playing all formats” as the reason for Dhoni’s decision.

‘Thank you. I’m done with this’: Shastri reveals MS Dhoni’s retirement speech

Ravi Shastri was in the dressing room and he has now revealed how Dhoni broke the news to the Indian players.

Speaking on on SEN Radio, Shastri revealed, “Dhoni didn’t wait. I was the coach. He said, Ravi, I need to have a chat with the boys for five minutes. Since we drew the game at the MCG, I said, sure. I thought he would say, ‘Boys, well done’. Instead, he just said, ‘Thank you. I’m done with this.'”

“There’s one Test match to go. He just, you know, just walked up there. Five-minute speech. No tantrums, no shenanigans. ‘I’m done. Thank you very much for your support. You know, I won’t be there in Sydney, but my total support for you guys.’ Because after that was the World Cup. And he was the captain of the World Cup side.”

Shastri added that he asked the other players whether they knew of Dhoni’s decision but the skipper had kept it only to himself.

“I looked around the dressing room. I asked players if he had had a chat with them. No one had a clue. No one had a clue he’s going to come and say what he did,” Shastri recalled.

Dhoni retired with 90 test caps and 4876 runs, scoring at an average of 38. The former skipper notched up six test centuries and 33 fifties.
