Shastri recently spoke about Imran’s situation and said that his comments were not about politics. He was concerned about how the former Pakistan captain was being treated.
“I’m not a politician. But just to see the way he’s being treated today is shocking. You know, no one treats a human being like that. On humanitarian grounds, I don’t think he deserves what he’s getting,” Shastri told Republic World.
Imran is currently in Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. He has reportedly lost much of the vision in his right eye after not getting proper medical care.
Reports have also said that he does not have access to books in his cell. Recently, 21 former international captains wrote to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, asking him to ensure better treatment for Imran. Seven former Australian cricketers also wrote to their government, asking for help in the matter.
These steps show that concerns about Imran’s health and treatment are growing in the cricket world.

Shastri also spoke about Imran’s career and praised him as one of the great all-rounders in cricket. Under Imran’s captaincy, Pakistan won the 1992 ODI World Cup with a young team.
“This man you’re seeing there with me was an unbelievable cricketer. I mean, a great cricketer is an understatement,” Shastri said.
He also called Imran a “leader of men” and praised his ability to guide and inspire his teammates.
Shastri said that India and Pakistan shared a strong rivalry during their playing days, but there was also respect between the players.
When asked if Imran could come out of jail, Shastri said he hoped the former captain would be released and treated better.
“Hopefully. Hope he comes out and is treated better. He’s been there for a long time,” he added.
