'He gave me…' Ravichandran Ashwin recalls 2012 incident with Gautam Gambhir
Ravichandran Ashwin feels that Gautam Gambhir is misunderstood as a person.
Veteran India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has recalled a past incident with former cricketer Gautam Gambhir in 2012 when Ashwin was playing his first full test series along with the former Indian opener.
Since past few days, the former cricketer Gambhir has been getting lots of attention from the cricket pundits. With the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) still searching to find Rahul Dravid’s successor many reports have confirmed that Gambhir is all set to take over the responsibility for the head coach role of the Indian cricket team.
Dravid’s tenure is all set to end after the conclusion of the ICC T20 World Cup in 2024. However, many media reports have suggested that a few days ago, Gambhir, along with WV Raman, was interviewed by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) for the next India head coach. The interview was given through a Zoom call.
Gambhir gave me confidence at the start of my career: Ravichandran Ashwin
Amidst all this, Ravi Ashwin recalled a moment from 2012 and expressed his thoughts when he was playing his full first test series along with Gambhir. The senior off-spinner Ashwin added that Gambhir gave him a lot of confidence at the beginning of his career.
“I was playing my first full series. I only carried drinks during the first two years before the World Cup in 2011. Gautam gave me a lot of confidence at the beginning of my career. I was not used to someone beyond my state (Tamil Nadu) giving me that sort of confidence,” Ashwin said at the launch of his book, ‘I Have the Streets – A Kutti Cricket Story.’
Gambhir is a misunderstood person: Ravi Ashwin
The veteran player Ashwin further stressed that the 2007 World T20 and 2011 ODI World Cup winner Gambhir is a very misunderstood person. Ashwin said that Gambhir is a fighter and competitor.
Ashwin further added that Gambhir’s desire and hunger to win games are unbelievable. The senior off-spinner went on to say that he has massive respect for the former Indian opener.
“Gautam Gambhir is a very misunderstood person. It’s all about perception. He is a fighter. The biggest issue with many of us is that we give hero status to someone in our mind and forget about everyone else. This is a sport, not a movie narrative. There are no heroes and villains. Gambhir is a competitor. His desire and hunger to win is unbelievable. I have massive respect for him,” he said.
