Ravindra Jadeja played 74 T20Is for India from 2009 to 2024.
Less than 24 hours after winning his first ICC T20 World Cup trophy, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja announced his retirement from T20Is.
Jadeja followed Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli into retirement from the shortest international format; the two senior India batters announced their retirement on Saturday itself, soon after India clinched their second T20 World Cup title by beating South Africa in the final in Barbados.
Despite being one of the fittest cricketers in the world, Jadeja has had knee injury issues over the last couple of years. With him being 35 years of age, and Axar Patel emerging as a better spin-bowling all-rounder in the recently concluded tournament, Jadeja felt this was the perfect opportunity to bow out from T20Is with a World Cup trophy in his hand.
I’ve always given my best for my country: Ravindra Jadeja
On Sunday, Jadeja took it to his Instagram handle to make this announcement. The all-rounder also confirmed in his post that he will continue to play in the other two formats for India. He didn’t mention anything about the Indian Premier League, so he is likely to continue playing for Chennai Super Kings.
Ravindra Jadeja wrote, “With a heart full of gratitude, I bid farewell to T20 internationals. Like a steadfast horse galloping with pride, I’ve always given my best for my country and will continue to do so in other formats . Winning the T20 World Cup was a dream come true, a pinnacle of my T20 International career. Thank you for the memories, the cheers, and the unwavering support.”
In the T20 World Cup 2024, Jadeja didn’t make any notable contributions with either bat or ball. He bowled 14 overs in eight matches and picked only one wicket. With the bat, the left-hander scored 35 runs at a strike rate of 159.
He made his T20I debut in 2009. In his T20I career, he played 74 matches, scoring 515 runs and picking up 54 wickets.
