[Watch] Ravindra Jadeja given out 'obstructing the field' in CSK vs RR IPL 2024 match
Ravindra Jadeja scored only five runs off six deliveries before being given out controversially.
Ravindra Jadeja was dismissed for ‘obstructing the field’ during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Sunday. This match was played at the M Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Sanju Samson won the toss and decided that RR would bat first. However, on a difficult wicket, the RR batsmen struggled to find a rhythm against disciplined CSK bowling.
Yashasvi Jaiswal (24) and Jos Buttler (21) provided a decent start of 43 in 6.2 overs. But it was Riyan Parag (47* with one four and three sixes) and Dhruv Jurel (28 in 18 balls) who propelled RR to 141/5 after 20 overs. The RR hitters failed to deliver in the final overs, and they fell short of the par total of 160-165.
Simarjeet Singh grabbed 3/26 for CSK, with Tushar Deshpande taking two wickets.
Rachin Ravindra got things started quickly, scoring 27 in 18 overs, while Ruturaj Gaikwad led the innings as captain. Daryl Mitchell (22), Moeen Ali (10), and Shivam Dube (18) all fell after getting starts.
Finally, it was Ruturaj Gaikwad’s 42* in 41 balls and Sameer Rizvi’s 15* in 8 balls that took CSK across the finish line in 18.2 overs and 5 wickets in hand.
Ravindra Jadeja given out obstructing the field
During the CSK innings, controversy ensued as the chase was getting tense. In the 16th over of a difficult low-scoring 142-run chase, Jadeja had made four of six deliveries when he drove Avesh Khan to third.
After attempting a second run off the shot, Jadeja was turned down by his teammate Ruturaj Gaikwad midway down the pitch. Jadeja then blocked a throw from RR wicket-keeper Sanju Samson, who immediately filed an obstruction appeal.
The on-field umpires then referred the decision to the higher level. Anil Chaudhary, the TV umpire, concluded that Jadeja had obviously watched the ball before attempting to make the crease. Jadeja was also running halfway across the batting strip. The umpire then referred Jadeja out since he was aware of the ball’s direction.
Jadeja was the third player to be dismissed obstructing the field in the IPL, with Yusuf Pathan in IPL 2010 and Amit Mishra in IPL 2019 being the other two.
