Bad news for Ravindra Jadeja! BCCI not keen to pick him for ICC Cricket World Cup 2027 - Reports

Ravindra Jadeja has been a crucial part of the Indian team across formats.

The ICC Cricket World Cup 2027 may still be distant, but from India’s point of view, it’s so crucial that it’s already become a major talking point. The competition is set to be played in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, under conditions totally unfamiliar to most players of the Indian squad. Hence, the team management will aim to build a squad that can adapt easily to different conditions. 

For Shubman Gill and Gautam Gambhir, the biggest challenge is not simply identifying the best XI but also naming reliable alternatives for major roles. India have a limited number of ODI fixtures left before the next World Cup starts, and hence it has become important for the management to test the potential of their players before the start of the marquee tournament. 

Despite India having a large pack of all-rounders, the concerns are still relevant in that department as well. India have struggled with fitness concerns around players who can contribute significantly with both the bat and ball. 

Ravindra Jadeja’s ICC Cricket World Cup 2027 spot under scanner – Reports

According to a report from the Times of India, veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja’s place in the 2027 ODI World Cup squad is not considered a certainty. The major reason behind this is Indian management citing young backup options. 

Jadeja’s record, however, gives him a strong case. In 210, he has scored 2905 runs at an average of 32.27 and has also picked 232 wickets in the format. His World Cup records include 21 matches across three editions, with 254 runs and 27 wickets. His best World Cup batting performance is 77, while his best bowling figures are 5/33. 

India need middle-order backups amid rising concerns over Hardik Pandya’s injuries

The bigger issue appears to be squad depth for the Indian management. Reportedly, the management does not believe that India currently have a replacement for everyone in that middle order, especially the all-rounders. 

Hardik Pandya is likely to be a crucial part of India’s World Cup plans; however, his fitness remains a major concern for India to consider before the World Cup. India need more seam-bowling options to meet the overseas demands; however, Nitish Kumar Reddy, who was once viewed as Pandya’s potential backup, has also struggled with too many injury concerns too early in his career. 

Recent Times of India reports have suggested that Reddy is still a project that the Indian management is aiming to develop as Pandya’s backup. This clearly shows that in the next few months, several domestic players might be given chances to prove themselves on the big stage, as India will need them to cater to the needs of their upcoming World Cup campaign. 

Though the situation does not mean that either Jadeja or Pandya will be ruled out from participation in the 2027 World Cup, it highlights the fact that even established stars will have to remain fit and productive to retain their spot in the XI.
