According to reports, the BCCI is trying to persuade Virat Kohli from test retirement.
Rumours are rife that Indian cricketer Virat Kohli might pull down the curtains on his test cricket career. On Saturday, May 10, multiple reports emerged in the media that Kohli is in talks with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) over last one month over his test retirement. However, same reports have also claimed that the BCCI has requested Kohli to reconsider his decision.
Now, cricketer-turned commentator Ambati Rayudu has taken to social media to urge Kohli to reconsider his decision. According to some other reports, Kohli was already thinking about retiring from test cricket during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25. Kohli told his teammates about his retirement thoughts multiple times amid his poor form in the series.
The right-handed batter slammed 190 runs across nine innings against Australia Down Under. Earlier this week, veteran Indian player Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from test cricket. He will continue to lead the Indian Cricket Team in the ODIs.
Test cricket will not be the same without Virat Kohli: Rayudu on X
On Sunday, May 11, former Indian cricketer Rayudu took to micro-blogging site X (formerly Twitter) and requested Kohli to reconsider his test retirement decision. The former right-handed batsman feels test cricket will not be the same without Kohli.
“Virat Kohli please don’t retire.. The Indian team needs you more than ever. You have so much more in the tank. Test cricket will not be the same without you walking out to battle it out for Team India.. Please reconsider..,” posted Rayudu on X.
Interestingly, Kohli was expected to be part of India’s next test assignment, a five-match test series in England. The series is also part of the next ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27. The India’s tour of England 2025 will begin on June 20. BCCI is yet to appoint the new test skipper for India.
Since his debut in 2011, Kohli has played 123 tests for the Indian Cricket Team. The 36-year-old has mustered 9230 runs across 210 innings, including 31 fifties and 30 centuries. Kohli has also smacked seven double tons in the longest format. He has already retired from T20Is.
