Punjab Kings finished fifth in the IPL 2026 points table.

Punjab Kings (PBKS) witnessed a dramatic journey in the Indian Premier League 2026. The Shreyas Iyer & Co. were the most dominant team in the first half, winning six consecutive games. They retained their top spot in the points table and looked like red-hot favourites to qualify for the playoffs.

PBKS were unbeaten in the first seven games and suffered their first defeat in their eighth clash against Rajasthan Royals. However, it started a losing streak that hampered their progress to the playoffs.

PBKS lost six consecutive games before winning their last league match against the Lucknow Super Giants. However, it wasn’t enough for a playoffs’ berth as they eventually finished 5th in the points table with 15 points. Below are four major reasons behind the Punjab Kings‘ exit from the IPL 2026 playoffs.

Reasons behind PBKS’ failure to reach the playoffs in IPL 2026

1. Weak bowling attack

Punjab Kings’ bowling was a crucial reason behind their failure in the second half of IPL 2026. Despite making changes in the bowling unit in many games, they could not form a powerful combination.

Key pacers like Arshdeep Singh, Marco Jansen, Xavier Bartlett, and Lockie Ferguson leaked runs at an economy of over 10. Their bowlers consistently failed to defend totals and control runs in the middle and death overs.

2. Top order batting collapses

In the initial games, Prabhsimran Singh, Priyansh Arya, Cooper Connolly, and Shreyas Iyer formed a strong top-order batting unit for PBKS. They also did a wonderful job in driving the team to victories.

However, they struggled with their dominance in the second half, suffering top-order collapses in a few games. Their poor starts hampered their batting might, and they failed to reach mammoth totals.

3. Losing momentum after the first defeat

Punjab were quite confident after their back-to-back victories in the initial games. They also chased down the highest-ever total in IPL history in a clash against the Delhi Capitals.

However, they went on the back foot after facing their first defeat against the Rajasthan Royals in the eighth match. After the defeat, PBKS completely lost their momentum and could not make a comeback. They lost six games in a row, which eventually shattered their hopes of reaching the playoffs.

4. Poor fielding and dropped catches in crucial games

The fielding standards became a topic of discussion this season, as teams dropped many catches. PBKS fielders also performed very poorly. They dropped catches at crucial moments.

For instance, Shashank Singh was in the spotlight after dropping about five catches across a three-match stretch. His fielding errors also frustrated coach Ricky Ponting.

Multiple catches were also dropped during spinner Yuvzendra Chahal’s overs. As per stats, Punjab dropped 16 out of 56 catches and registered the worst catch efficiency at 71%.

Punjab Kings finished at which position in the IPL 2026 points table?

Punjab finished fifth in the points table with 15 points.

How many games did PBKS win in IPL 2026?

Out of 14 games, PBKS won 7 and lost 6. Their one match was abandoned due to rain.
