3 reasons why it is difficult for Ravindra Jadeja to secure place in ODIs now

Ravindra Jadeja last played an ODI game in January 2026.
Ravindra Jadeja is one of the best all-rounders to ever play for India across formats. He made his international debut in 2009 and has been a consistent member of the side over the years.
Over the years, Ravindra Jadeja has been X-factor for India. His fitness along with his spin-bowling, batting, and quick fielding has helped him to be a stand-out performer across three formats for more than a decade, which in itself is a huge achievement.
The 37-year-old announced his retirement from T20Is in 2024 and is only active in Tests and ODIs. While he continues to be a dominant force for Indian Cricket Team in the red-ball format, he has been sidelined from the 50-over format in recent times. In this listicle, let’s discuss three reasons why Ravindra Jadeja will find it difficult to return to the Indian Team in ODIs.
Why Ravindra Jadeja will find it difficult to return to ODIs
3. Close competition for spin all-rounders in Indian Team
A decade ago, Indian Cricket Team had very few spin bowling all-rounders, which forced selectors to play legends like Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin across all formats.
However, selectors now have an abundance of all-rounders to choose from, with many young players also making a mark in domestic cricket and IPL. Washington Sundar and Axar Patel are two frontline spin all-rounders in ODIs at the moment.
Left-arm orthodox spinner Harsh Dubey recently made his ODI debut against Afghanistan. Hence, the huge competition for the few spots in the squad will make things harder for Jadeja in future.
2. Jadeja’s poor show in ODIs this year

Notably, Jadeja was at his best in ODIs last year, scoring 106 runs in seven innings at an average of 53.0. Out of seven innings across 10 games, he was unbeaten in five matches. However, he struggled with his form in the ODI series against New Zealand earlier this year.
India and New Zealand clashed in three ODI games, in which Jadeja could only piled up 43 runs including a highest score of 27. Moreover, India suffered a humiliating series defeat at home against the Black Caps, which stunned and agitated the entire cricket fraternity as well as selectors.
His poor form in the campaign might also be the reason for his ouster from the recent ODI series against Afghanistan and the upcoming campaign against England.
1. Jadeja’s age factor and selectors eyeing future stars for India
BCCI’s next focus in the 50-over format is winning the ODI World Cup 2027. Selectors have already started building a strong squad for the campaign and managing the workload of prominent ODI players ahead of the tournament.
The history of Indian cricket proves that veteran players have lost their place in the squad to youngsters ahead of an ICC tournament. For instance, Shikhar Dhawan was replaced by Shubman Gill ahead of the previous Cricket World Cup in 2023.
Jadeja will turn 38 years old in December this year and will be among the most senior players in the squad. Hence, his age factor could be a big reason for his permanent ouster from the ODI team in the near future.
Moreover, selectors are also eyeing future stars in ODIs and have given preference to young players in recent times. If these players manage to showcase their consistent form, selectors won’t turn back to Jadeja and he would find it too challenging to make a comeback.
