Devdutt Padikkal became the fourth Indian to score his maiden Test hundred in Sri Lanka.
Devdutt Padikkal produced one of the most defining batting performances of India’s first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle. From being a backup for Sai Sudharsan at no. 3 to grasping the opportunity and turning it into a historic statement, Padikkal aced it to perfection.
Devdutt Padikkal was part of India’s squad at the back of his dominant domestic run, but he hardly stood a chance of featuring in the playing XI had Sudharsan not been ruled out due to injury. The left-hander scored a brilliant 167 in the first innings and backed it with a 44 in the second, finishing with 211 runs in the match.
Here are the records Devdutt Padikkal created in the first test at Galle

1. First Indian batter to score a Test century on Independence Day
Devdutt Padikkal’s maiden Test century came on Day 1 of the First Test between India and Sri Lanka at the Galle International Stadium. That day marked the 80th year of India’s independence. With this, Padikkal became the first Indian to score a Test century on the occasion of Independence Day.
Legendary Indian batter Virat Kohli holds the record for scoring an ODI century on Independence Day, which he scored against the West Indies back in 2019.

4. 211-run aggregate is the second-highest among India’s no. 3 batters against Sri Lanka
Combining his two innings, Padikkal accumulated 211 runs in the Galle Test, which puts him just four runs short of Rahul Dravid’s 215 runs against Sri Lanka back in 2009. This is the second-highest game aggregate for a player at no. 3 for India in Test cricket against Sri Lanka.
