Wiaan Mulder scored an unbeaten 367 runs against Zimbabwe in the second test.

South Africa Cricket Team all-rounder Wiaan Mulder, on Monday, July 7, 2025, scripted his name in the record books with his unbeaten triple century against Zimbabwe in the second test at Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo. Mulder was named as the stand-in skipper of South Africa in the encounter after Keshav Maharaj was ruled out due to injury.

Batting at three, the right-handed batsman turned out to be a nightmare for Zimbabwe bowlers in the first innings. He scored an unbeaten knock of 367 runs off 334 deliveries, batting at a strike rate of over 109.

During his fabulous innings, he hammered 49 fours and four sixes. Zimbabwe bowlers failed to dismiss Mulder as he remained unbeaten at 367 runs before South Africa declared their first innings.

With his triple century, he powered the Proteas to a gigantic total of 626/5d in the first innings.

1. First batter to hit 300 on test captaincy debut

Notably, Wiaan Mulder took the test captaincy of South Africa for the first time in test ricket and aced that challenge brilliantly. He became the first batsman to score a triple ton on test captaincy debut. Previously, only two batters – Graham Dowling of New Zealand and Shivnarine Chanderpaul of the West Indies had hit double centuries on test captaincy debut.

2. First South African batter to hit 350 in test cricket

Mulder, with his unbeaten 367 in the innings, became the first Proteas batter to score 350 runs in an innings in test cricket. Only two South African players have hit triple centuries in tests. Hashim Amla is the other batsman who scored a triple century against England at The Oval in 2012.

3. Highest individual score by a South African batter in test cricket

Mulder’s score is also the highest individual score by a South African batter in test cricket. With his 367-run knock, he has broken Hashim Amla’s 13-year-old record of 311 runs, which he scored against England at the Oval.

4. Second-fastest triple century in test cricket

Mulder reached his triple century in 297 balls in the match, scripting the record for the second-fastest century in test cricket. The record for the fastest triple ton is held by former India opener Virender Sehwag. During a clash against South Africa in 2008, Sehwag scored a triple century off just 278 deliveries.

5. Fastest triple century by South African batter in test cricket

Wiaan Mulder has also recorded the fastest triple century by a South African batter in tests as he achieved the feat in 297 deliveries. Notably, Hashim Amla is the only other Proteas batter to score a triple century in test cricket. Amla reached his triple century in 515 deliveries.

6. Highest individual score in an away test

Mulder’s unbeaten 367 runs is also the highest individual score by a batsman in an away test match. The record was previously held by Pakistan’s Hanif Mohammad, who slammed 337 runs against the West Indies in Barbados in 1958.

7. Fifth highest individual score in test cricket

Mulder’s 367* is the fifth-highest individual score in test cricket. The top four batsmen in the list are Brian Lara (400*), Matthew Hayden (380), Brian Lara (375), and Mahela Jayawardene (374).

8. Second-most fours in an innings in test cricket

During his stay at the crease, Mulder hit 49 boundaries in his innings, which is most by a South African batter in test cricket and overall second-most. Former England batter John Edrich holds the record for most fours in an innings in test cricket. He had hit 52 boundaries during his unbeaten 310 against New Zealand in Leeds in 1965.
