India have played international cricket against teams from across the world for more than nine decades. What started with a Test match against England in 1932 has grown into a long list of opponents across different formats.
Over the years, India have faced traditional cricketing rivals such as Australia, England, Pakistan and New Zealand, while also coming up against teams that joined international cricket later. Each new opponent brought a first meeting, and those matches have given different results for India.
Some of India’s first matches against new teams ended in comfortable wins, while others were much tougher. There have also been a few draws and defeats, especially during the early years of India’s international journey.
The list has continued to expand with the growth of international cricket. India have faced newer opponents such as Afghanistan, Nepal, USA and Oman in recent years, while Japan is set to become the latest addition in 2026.

India’s first international match was against England in 1932. The Test at Lord’s ended in a 158-run defeat for India.
Australia were the next opponent, with India facing them for the first time in 1947. The match was in Brisbane, and it ended with an innings and 226-run defeat.
India’s first match against the West Indies in 1948 ended in a draw, while their first meeting with Pakistan in 1952 brought India’s first win against the arch-rival.
