The Indian Premier League (IPL) is the most expensive franchise T20 league in the world. IPL offers handsome contracts to players, with many well-known and international stars earning salaries in crores each season.
Wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant holds the record for being the costliest player ever in the IPL auction at INR 27 crore. Some overseas players have also earned expensive contracts from their respective teams.
As per the format in the league, every team can retain some players in their squads at their auction price. In the auction, they can pick their favourite players by bidding the highest price.
The highest salary brackets in the auctions are INR 2 crore, INR 1.5 crore, and INR 1 crore. Moreover, the minimum pay for every player registered in the auction is INR 30 lakh.
Notably, players are given the price they acquire in the auction. In every match, there are also cash rewards for various prizes like Player of the Match, Super Striker, Most Fours and Sixes. In the past, many players have confirmed that such cash rewards are distributed among the team, even though they are won by a single player.
Players do not get a match fee in the Indian Premier League
There is also a debate about whether players get separate match fees in addition to their auction price. In a recent podcast, RCB pacer Yash Dayal confirmed that players do not get any match fee in the IPL. They are only given their auction price.
He added that recently the BCCI has made a rule of rewarding the match fee of INR 7 lakh to senior members of the Indian Cricket Team who play in the IPL. However, he was not sure about the rule. He also noted that there is a Daily Allowance (DA) of INR 5000 for every player.
Meanwhile, the salary format is different for players in the BCCI’s central contracts. They are offered a base salary for every year, which ranges from INR 1 to 7 crore depending upon the category. Moreover, players get a separate match fee for every game they play for the national team.
