As per the reports in Crizbuzz, FanCode has secured the streaming rights for the one-off India vs Japan T20I in India. This means Indian fans will be able to watch the historic game online on the platform.
The development comes after ITW Universe secured the exclusive global sports production, broadcast distribution and commercial marketing rights for the fixture. ITW Universe will also control the broadcast feed and commercial inventory for the match.
According to Cricbuzz reports, ITW Universe was in discussions with major broadcasters and OTT platforms for television and streaming partnerships. Star, Sony and Zee were understood to be in talks for the television rights.
However, it was Star, who won the rights and will be broadcasting the India vs Japan T20I game in India.
Netflix and YouTube could enter the race for global rights
While FanCode has secured the India streaming rights, the international broadcast picture is still being worked out. It is being reported that YouTube and Netflix could be among the platforms interested in securing international streaming rights for the game. JioHotstar, which has recently expanded its service globally, could also enter the race.
The match has an importance beyond cricket as it will celebrate the 75 years of diplomatic relations between India and Japan. The Japan Cricket Association is using the fixture as an opportunity to promote cricket in the country and connect with a wider audience.
JCA CEO Naoki Alex Miyaji said the India vs Japan match is a major milestone for the growth of cricket in Japan.
“Bringing the Indian cricket team to Japanese soil for this historic T20I is a defining milestone for the growth of cricket in Japan,” Miyaji said.
On the field, VVS Laxman is set to serve as India’s head coach for this Japan tour, with Shreyas Iyer leading the side.
