Marco Jansen played under head coach Ricky Ponting for Punjab Kings in IPL 2025.
South Africa all-rounder Marco Jansen is part of the Proteas squad for the upcoming ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 final. The summit clash will be played between South Africa and Australia at Lord’s in London from June 11.
South Africa have started their preparations for the tournament. They are currently locking horns with Zimbabwe in a warm-up test match in England to prepare for the crucial encounter against Australia.
Notably, Jansen had a successful stint with Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 recently. He picked 16 wickets in 14 games to finish as the second-highest wicket-taker for the side. The left-arm pacer held an average of 27.12 and an economy of 9.20.
Marco Jansen reveals Ricky Ponting’s witty message before leaving IPL 2025
Ricky Ponting, who became the head coach of PBKS ahead of the IPL 2025, did a wonderful job as the team finished as the runners-up in the tournament. Jansen opened up about Ponting’s witty message when he left the franchise to prepare for the ICC WTC final 2023-25.
“Before I left (India), he (Ponting) just said ‘good luck, I hope you do well, but I hope you lose’,” Jansen was quoted as saying by ICC Digital.
Jansen also learnt valuable lessons from Ponting during his stint in IPL 2025. The 25-year-old revealed that Ponting has a very positive attitude that helped him mentally during the tournament.
“I learnt a lot from him, especially from a mental point of view. He is always positive and he always sees the good stuff instead of the bad stuff, if it makes sense. And I think that’s why he’s a legend of the game, because you always lean towards what could happen instead of what could go wrong”, Jansen said.
“For me personally in the IPL, he’s helped a lot in that regard, because he always reminds you what could be, what you can do and what could happen instead of what couldn’t happen,” he added.
Meanwhile, the PBKS all-rounder could not play for the team in the playoffs as he had to return to South Africa for ICC WTC 2023-25 final preparations. All the South African players, who are part the squad, were told to return home on May 26 for national duties.
Notably, IPL 2025 was initially going to conclude on May 25, however, the tournament was suspended for around one week and was extended till June 3 due to border tensions between India and Pakistan.
