"He's heartbroken.." Rinku Singh's father breaks silence after Rinku misses out on ICC T20 World Cup 2024 selection

Rinku Singh has been named as one of the four reserve players in Indian squad for T20 World Cup 2024.

Rinku Singh’s father, Khanchandra Singh, described the cricketer as being heartbroken during an emotional conversation with him after the southpaw was not named to India’s 15-man T20 World Cup 2024 squad.

On April 30, the BCCI selection panel announced the Indian squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, with the final 15 players chosen. Rinku Singh’s name was not in the final squad, but he was added to the four reserve players, which included Shubman Gill, Avesh Khan, and Khaleel Ahmed.

Rinku Singh made a great impression during the IPL 2023, hitting five consecutive sixes in the penultimate over against GT to secure KKR’s exciting triumph. His regular run-scoring propelled him into contention for a berth on the Indian squad, and he eventually received the coveted call-up in August last year. Rinku Singh has an impressive record for India in T20Is, scoring 359 runs at an average of 89 in 15 matches. Even more surprising is his astonishing rate of 176, demonstrating his ability to score quickly and decisively.

Rinku Singh’s absence sparked a significant outcry, with many criticizing the selection committee for the arbitrary decision.

Rinku Singh’s father, Khanchandra Singh opened up about his son’s exclusion from the squad and said that there was ‘sadness’ over what happened.

“Umeedein to bohot this, hum mithai, patakhe laye they, socha that wo 11 main khelega. isliye thoda dukh bhi hai. (We brought sweets, and crackers to celebrate, we thought Rinku would play in the first eleven),” Khanchandra told Bharat 24.

When asked about how Rinku is feeling at the moment, his father revealed that the KKR star is a bit heartbroken and he earlier called his mother to inform her about him not being part of the World Cup squad.

“Uska dil toh tuta hai. Usne apni maa se baat ki aur bataya ki uska naam nahi hai 11 ya 15 mein. Lekin bataya hain ke wo jaa raha hain (He is heartbroken. He spoke to his mother and told her that he was not picked in the 11 or 15. But he also said that he would be traveling with the team)” Khanchandra added.

Rinku Singh failed to stave off stiff competition from Shivam Dube for the finisher’s spot in the India squad. Shivam Dube’s ability to hit spinners for big sixes and the fact he can bowl medium pace went in his favor.
