'Teri umar hi kya hai...,' Rinku Singh reveals chat with Rohit Sharma after ICC T20 World Cup snub

Despite a strong T20I record, Rinku Singh wasn’t picked in India’s ICC T20 World Cup 2024 squad.

Indian batter Rinku Singh has recalled the chat with Rohit Sharma after he was omitted from India’s squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

Rinku had a dream Indian Premier League 2023 season with the bat. Representing Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Rinku smashed 474 runs in 14 matches at a stunning average of 59.25. After having a phenomenal run in the IPL 2023 edition, Rinku earned his maiden T20I and ODI call-up.

Since making his international debut, Rinku has emerged as India’s best finisher in the shortest format. The 26-year-old has played 23 T20Is and smashed 418 runs at an admirable average of 59.71, including two half-centuries.

It was believed that Rinku had cemented his place in India’s T20I squad, but the Indian selection committee felt otherwise. This decision by the BCCI shocked the fans and many cricket pundits criticized the selectors.

However, the decision to exclude Rinku didn’t come to bite the selectors back as the Indian cricket team clinched the trophy in Barbados.

Rinku has now recalled a conversation he had with Rohit after the selection snub. Rinku revealed that Rohit told him to not get disappointed and to focus on his game. Rohit told the youngster that he will get more opportunities to play in World Cup tournaments in the coming years.

“Haan woh (Rohit Sharma) aaye the samjane ki koi baat nahi, teri umar hi kya hai. World Cup aage bohut hai. Mehnat karte reh. Har do saal mein World Cup aata hai, uspe dhyaan de. Koi dikkat nahi hai, pareshan mat ho,” Rinku told News24.

Rinku featured in the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka, where the Men in Blue whitewashed hosts Sri Lanka 3-0.
