Rishabh Pant was bought by Lucknow Super Giants for INR 27 crores in IPL 2025 mega auction.

On Monday, January 20, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) confirmed that Rishabh Pant will captain the franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.

The upcoming season will be the first time Pant represents a franchise other than Delhi Capitals (DC) (previously Delhi Daredevils) in the IPL. Pant made his IPL debut in 2016 and played for DC across eight seasons, scoring 3284 runs in 111 matches at an impressive strike rate of 149.

As expected, Pant became the most expensive player at the IPL 2025 mega auction, securing a deal worth INR 27 crores with LSG. He broke Shreyas Iyer’s record being the most expensive buy at the IPL auction, who had been sold for INR 26.75 crore just moments before him.

Pant will take over the leadership role LSG after a disappointing season for the franchise last year, in which they finished seventh with 14 points from 14 games. LSG made the bold decision to part ways with KL Rahul, who had captained the franchise since its inception in 2022.

Rishabh Pant captaincy record in IPL:

Pant carries rich leadership experience in the biggest T20 league in the world. He first captained in IPL 2021 after DC’s regular captain Shreyas Iyer was ruled out due to an injury.

Pant did an excellent job that year, leading his team to finish as table toppers in the league stage with 20 points from 14 games, including 10 wins. However, his team suffered back-to-back defeats in the playoffs, losing to Chennai Super Kings in Qualifier 1 and Kolkata Knight Riders in Qualifier 2, which led to their elimination from the tournament.

Pant’s leadership saw a decline in the following seasons. In IPL 2022, Delhi finished fifth with 14 points from 14 games. After missing the 2023 season due to injuries sustained in a car accident, he returned in 2024, only to see his team finish sixth with 14 points once again.

Overall, Pant has led his team to 23 wins, 19 losses, and 1 tie in 43 games, giving him a win-loss ratio of 1.21.

During his captaincy tenure, Pant has enjoyed excellent returns with the bat, As a skipper in the IPL, he scored 1205 runs in 43 games at an average of 35 and strike rate of 144, hitting six half-centuries.
