Rishabh Pant surpasses MS Dhoni to achieve THIS major feat in SL vs IND 2nd Test

Rishabh Pant re-established himself as India’s highest scorer in WTC history with a half-century in Colombo.

Rishabh Pant continued his remarkable run in the longest format with another major milestone during the second Test of India’s tour of Sri Lanka (SL vs IND) in Colombo.

The wicketkeeper-batter has repeatedly rewritten records set by India’s most iconic gloveman. This time, he broke another major record held by MS Dhoni in red-ball cricket.

Pant’s latest achievements came in a particularly challenging context, as he had suffered a nasty blow to his wrist on Day 1 of the 2nd Test. After leaving the field on Day 1, he returned to play the remainder of his innings on Day 2, following the dismissal of debutant Saransh Jain in the opening session.

He resumed his innings despite the discomfort and helped India to a formidable score, himself unlocking a major triumph in his Test career. 

Rishabh Pant becomes India’s leading run-scoring wicket-keeper in away Tests

With a knock of 63 runs in the first innings of the SL vs IND 2nd Test, Indian wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant crossed the 2500-run mark in away or neutral Tests. With this, he surpassed MS Dhoni’s previous tally of 2,496 runs as a designated wicket-keeper batter in away or neutral Tests for India. 

After reaching the milestone, Pant had 2,501 runs at an average of 41.68, while Dhoni, in his Test career for India, had accumulated 2,496 runs at an average of 32.84.

Before the former Indian skipper, Farokh Engineer, was India’s highest run-getter in away Tests for nearly four decades with 1209 runs, followed by Syed Kirmani and Kiran More. 

The achievement further outlines Pant’s excellent Test record, as his contributions in India’s away wins have been significant ever since the golden era of Indian Test cricket.

Pant was a major contributor in India’s wins in Australia and England over the past few years. Another positive aspect for Pant is that he achieved this feat much earlier in his career compared to all the other great Indian players on that list.

This record is only an addition to Pant’s long set of records as a wicket-keeper batter. In 2024, Pant became the fastest Indian wicket-keeper to cross the 2,500-run mark in Test cricket.

By scoring his seventh century in 2025, Pant surpassed even Dhoni to become the Indian wicket-keeper with the most Test centuries.

Earlier, during the opening match of this series against Sri Lanka at Galle, Pant became the first Indian batter with 100 sixes in his Test career while also achieving the historic feat in just his 51st Test, the fastest by any cricketer in the world.
