Pant scored a quick 24-ball 27 runs in the first innings. However, when it mattered, Pant failed in the second innings and scored 2 off 21 balls. India got all out for 90 runs and lost the game.
4. 7 off 8 vs SA, Guwahati, 2025
Pant made his Test captaincy debut against South Africa in Guwahati in 2025. It turned out to be a poor start as India recorded their highest defeat margin.
India got all out for 201 in the first innings in response to South Africa’s 489. Pant scored 7 off 8 balls with the bat, and India conceded a lead of 288 runs.

With a 288-run lead, South Africa declared their second innings at 260/5 and gave India a massive target of 548 runs. India had yet another batting failure in the second innings, and they were bowled out for 140 runs, losing by 408 runs.
India were 5/58 with the bat when Pant got out for 13 off 16 balls. Pant finished that series with 49 runs at an average of 12.25.
2. 81 off 121 vs AFG, Mullanpur, 2026
Pant returned to Test for the one-off test against Afghanistan in Mullanpur in June 2026. India recorded a win by an innings and 300 runs in this game.
The hosts batted once and declared at 564/8 and bowled out Afghanistan for 152 and 112 runs. Pant returned with a bang and scored 81 off 121 balls with six fours and three sixes.

Pant has an impressive Test record against Sri Lanka with an average of over 50. He played another impactful knock against them in the ongoing Galle Test.
Pant scored 39 off 62 balls, with four fours and one six in the first innings. He played a vital role in the 71-run stand with Devdutt Padikkal, and India scored 462 on a tough wicket.
