Robin Uthappa backs Shreyas Iyer to become India captain after winning IPL 2024

Shreyas Iyer-led Kolkata Knight Riders lost only three games in the IPL 2024.

Under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) etched their name in Indian Premier League (IPL) history as they clinched their third title.

KKR crushed the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the grand finale of IPL 2024 at the M.A. Chidambaram stadium in Chennai on May 26. Kolkata won the IPL trophy after a span of 10 years. Previously, they won the titles in the 2012 and 2014 editions.

In the IPL 2024, the Iyer-led side had a phenomenal run in the league stage. Kolkata finished at top of the table with 20 points in 14 matches.

After reaching playoffs, they played SRH in the Qualifier 1 where they won the match by eight wickets on May 21. KKR once again outclassed Pat Cummins-led SRH in the grand finale on May 26 to clinch their third IPL trophy.

Notably, Shreyas-led KKR just lost a total of three games in the IPL 2024 and won nine matches, which showcased Iyer’s skills as a leader.

Many cricket pundits felt that Shreyas’ captaincy in the IPL 2024 was underappreciated, despite not making many mistakes in the tournament. However, former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa praised Iyer’s leadership and said that he could be the future Indian skipper.

“I am going to say it here. He is going to be the future India captain. I think he is next in line, maybe even ahead of Shubman Gill. He has got the character and wherewithal to handle a team. I think there’s a lot he has learnt this season. You have got to understand that he was working with Gautam Gambhir, Chandrkant Pandit and Abhishek Nayar – three very strong personalities,” Uthappa said about Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy.

The former KKR batter also added that Shreyas captained the Kolkata-based franchise with utter dominance in the IPL 2024 season and he sets himself up for the next Indian captain.

“You have to navigate your way through these strong personalities throughout the season while having your way, and learning on the run. That’s not easy to navigate through an entire IPL season while performing, giving your best and making the right calls. He has done that with utter dominance. That tells you a lot about his character and what he believes he is capable of. I think because of that, he sets himself up in the right space to be in the conversation for the next Indian captain,” Uthappa further added.
