Rohit Sharma becomes 7th Indian to captain 100 matches in international cricket

Rohit Sharma has won 73 out of his 99 matches so far as Indian team captain.

Rohit Sharma has completed 100 matches as captain across formats in international cricket. He became the 7th Indian to achieve the feat. India are currently taking on England in their sixth match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

In the process, Rohit Sharma has now joined an elite list of players. MS Dhoni (332 matches), Mohammad Azharuddin (221), Virat Kohli (213), Sourav Ganguly (196), Kapil Dev (108) and Rahul Dravid (104) are the other Indian captains to have led the team in more than a century of games in international cricket.

The elegant opener has also scored 3936 runs in his 99 matches as captain of Indian team, at an average of 42.78. Rohit's run as the captain of Indian team began on December 10, 2017, against Sri Lanka in an ODI. In late 2021, the dashing opener took over from his teammate Virat Kohli.

India are currently undefeated in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. In spite of losing a flurry of wickets against England in the ongoing match, Rohit Sharma has played yet another stellar knock to take the hosts to a competitive position so far. England will be desperate to beat India today in order to stay alive in the competition.

The in-form opener also completed 18,000 runs in international cricket. Rohit has the highest win percentage as Indian captain. Batting mainstay Virat Kohli led India in 213 matches. Under his captaincy, India won 135 games while suffering defeats in 60 matches.

At the toss today, Rohit mentioned that he doesn't mind losing the toss as India wanted to bat first. “We wanted to bat first, but we have had a good time batting second. It looks like a good pitch; it's a new surface, which has been relayed here. It has played well for 100 overs. I mean, it's quite important to think like that, but it's important to get the two points. We have played some good cricket. It's always good to have a break. It's nice to come back here and get back into business. We are playing the same team we played in the last game,” Rohit stated after England won the toss and opted to bowl in Lucknow.
