India's tour of West Indies 2023
Rohit Sharma surpasses Sunil Gavaskar's record, only behind Virender Sehwag in this test record
Rohit Sharma scored 80 runs on Day one of the second Test against West Indies at Port of Spain.
Rohit Sharma earned a very good milestone during the ongoing second test match between West Indies and India being played at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain in Trinidad on July 20th.
West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite won the toss and chose to bowl first on what could be described as one of the slowest pitches produced on a traditional pacy Port of Spain venue. Kirk McKenzie made his Test debut for the Windies and replaced Raymon Reifer in the XI.
Shannon Gabriel also came into the side in place of Rahkeem Cornwall.
For India, Mukesh Kumar was handed his Test debut cap and he replaced injured Shardul Thakur in the playing XI.
India started well as openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal picked up from where they had left in the first Test in Dominica. Then they had added more than 200 runs for the first innings and here, they were merciless against the West Indies bowlers as Brathwaite had to bring in spinner Jomel Warrican to bowl only after 45 minutes of play in the first session.
The duo added their second 100-plus run partnership for the first wicket in consecutive innings, but Jaiswal fell for a well-made 57 runs. Rohit Sharma looked good for his second hundred but was dismissed for 80 runs.
Then India lost a few quick wickets as after Jaiswal and Rohit, Shubman Gill (10) and Ajinkya Rahane (8) departed in succession leaving India a bit worried at 182/4.
Then Ravindra Jadeja joined Virat Kohli in the middle and the duo began scoring at a decently brisk rate. The duo added more than 100 runs in their unbeaten partnership for the fifth wicket as India were 288/4 at the stumps on day one. Virat Kohli was unbeaten on 87 and Ravindra Jadeja was 36*.
Rohit Sharma now only behind Virender Sehwag in the list for the fastest Indian to 2,000 runs as Test opener
Rohit Sharma had looked good for another century as he hammered 9 fours and 2 sixes off eye-soothing pull shots. But he was beaten by the slowness of the pitch and lost his wicket to Jomel Warrican.
During his knock, Rohit got to 2000 runs as a Test opener. He reached the landmark in his 40th innings as a Test opener, becoming the second fastest Indian opener to reach 2000 runs, behind Virender Sehwag (39 innings).
In the process, he became the first Indian batter (10th overall) to get to 2000 runs in the World Test Championships.
Sunil Gavaskar leads the run tally for Indian Test openers with 9607 runs, and Sehwag second with 8207 runs.
Fastest Indian to complete 2000 Test runs as an opener:
Virender Sehwag - 39 innings
Rohit Sharma - 40 innings
Sunil Gavaskar - 43 innings
Gautam Gambhir - 43 innings
Shikhar Dhawan - 47 innings
