Hardik Pandya took over MI captaincy reins from Rohit Sharma prior to IPL 2024.

Mumbai Indians (MI), captained by Hardik Pandya, lost their first encounter of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against Gujarat Titans (GT) by 6 runs on Sunday, March 24. This signified the beginning of a new chapter for Mumbai, with Pandya taking over as captain from Rohit Sharma.

MI suffered their 12th consecutive defeat in the first match of an IPL season. The crowd at the stadium gave Hardik a hard time. Notably, Hardik, who had led GT for the previous two seasons, moved to MI before the IPL 2024. MI then replaced Rohit as captain and handed over the reins to Hardik.

The shift in leadership did not sit well with the crowd, who relentlessly taunted Hardik throughout the game. Hardik was booed at the toss, and Rohit’s chants were a clear sign that cricket fans were dissatisfied with MI’s choice to give over the captaincy to Hardik.

During the match, a video went viral in which an intense chat was captured between Rohit and Hardik. Rohit is seen chatting with MI players and co-owner Akash Ambani. Then Hardik came and hugged him from behind.

But, the former MI captain showed an irritated look on his face when he turned around and looked frustrated as he held an intense chat with the successor.

Here is the video:

MI fails to capture important moments in the match as they lose to GT

MI accomplished most of the things correctly during the game and dominated it for the most part. They reduced GT to a modest 168-6, and Rohit Sharma’s sublime 43 set up the chase perfectly. With 43 needed in 30 balls and seven wickets in hand, MI were on track for a comfortable victory.

Two consecutive cheap overs put MI under strain and precipitated a collapse. The equation came down to 19 in the final over, with Hardik Pandya still at the crease. The captain blasted a six and a four on the opening two deliveries before being dismissed on the third. Umesh Yadav dismissed Piyush Chawla on the next ball, sealing the game for GT.
