3 Indian cricketers who can replace Rohit Sharma as India test captain
Rohit Sharma became India’s test captain in 2022.
There are more questions than answers surrounding the Indian cricket team right now. The Asian giants have come under heavy scrutiny after their humiliating 0-3 whitewash defeat against New Zealand at home.
The embarrassing feat has marked the first instance in Indian history where they have suffered a whitewash defeat in a home series of three or more tests.
Indian captain Rohit Sharma has been in horrible form in test cricket in 2024. The explosive Indian opener has accounted for 588 runs this year at an ordinary average of 29.
Sharma’s poor form combined with his age of 37 has started a debate among the Indian cricketing community about his future in the test side and who should succeed Rohit as the next test captain, a transition in the role that seems coming sooner than expected.
In this article, we will look at three players who can replace Rohit Sharma as India’s test captain.
Three Indian cricketers who can replace Rohit Sharma as India’s test captain:
1. Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill stands out as a promising option for India’s future test captaincy. Gill has shown remarkable maturity since his debut. Gill’s impressive numbers at the start of his test career are a testament to his ability to thrive a a young age against world-class bowling attacks.
Only 25 years old, Gill represents the new wave of Indian cricket. Appointing him as captain could provide a long-term solution and a fresh approach for the Indian cricket team. Moreover, he has recently taken charge as vice-captain of India’s limited-overs sides as well.
2. Rishabh Pant
Rishabh Pant has been India’s best test batsman for a long while. Since the start of 2018, Pant is India’s fourth-highest test run-scorer, and his average of 44 is the best among the top 10 Indian scorers in this period.
Pant has previously captained Delhi Capitals on multiple occasions in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Pant is 27 years old and will be at the peak of his powers in the coming years if he is not there already. Pant’s appointment as India’s test captain would help the team plan for the long term and work around a guy who is a match-winner in his role.
Pant is also extremely vocal behind the wickets and frequently contributes to on-field leadership discussions.
3. Jasprit Bumrah
Star Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah can be a top choice to replace Rohit Sharma as India’s test captain. Bumrah led India in the fifth test of the five-match test series against England in Edgbaston in 2022. Bumrah was also the vice-captain in the recently concluded IND vs NZ test series.
The speedster has been a top performer for India across all formats. If he does get the full-time captaincy, it will mark the first instance of a fast bowler being appointed for the leadership role in Indian cricket since Kapil Dev.
