Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired from T20Is after winning ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

Team India are currently in Zimbabwe for a five-match T20I series. Only three members of India’s ICC T20 World Cup 2024-winning squad are part of the ongoing series. India ended their 11-year ICC trophy drought and became the World T20 Champions, and it also saw the end of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja from T20 internationals. These three will continue to play ODIs and tests for India.

However, some media reports suggest that India are set to give rest to senior players in the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah are among those players who might get rest in order to stay fresh for remainder of the season, where India will host Bangladesh, New Zealand, and then tour Australia.

India to rest Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah for Sri Lanka ODIs – Report

With a long season coming up, India want their big names to be ready and fresh for the coming series. After the Zimbabwe tour, India will tour Sri Lanka for three T20Is and as many ODIs, starting on July 27. The ODI series will start on August 2. Following that, India will host Bangladesh for two tests and three tests starting September 19.

The squad for the Sri Lanka series is likely to be announced next week. Meanwhile, a BCCI source confirmed to the Indian Express that the management is looking to rest the seniors. He said, “Senior players can take some rest and get ready for the full cricket season ahead. Rohit, Virat, and Bumrah have been offered rest and will join the team for the Test matches against Bangladesh in September.”

After the Bangladesh series, New Zealand will tour India for three tests, starting on October 16. Then, India will fly South Africa for four T20Is between November 8 and 15. After one week of the T20I series, the first test of the high-profile Border-Gavaskar Test series will kick off on November 22. The BCCI hasn’t announced the new head coach, which is likely to be announced ahead of the Sri Lanka tour. Gautam Gambhir is the front-runner for this position.
