Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are part of India’s squad for ENG vs IND ODIs.

The three-match ODI series between India and England kicked off on Tuesday, July 14, with the opening game at Edgbaston, Birmingham. The Men in Blue aim for a big comeback in the ODI series after suffering a humiliating whitewash in the T20I series.

Notably, the series holds great importance for veteran batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in context of their participation for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027. The preparation for the tournament, which will take place in October and November next year, has already begun.

Virat Kohli missed the previous ODI series against Afghanistan in June due to a hamstring injury. Earlier in January, he was at his best in the ODI series against New Zealand, slamming one century and a half-century across three games.

Rohit could not impress against the Black Caps; however, he had decent outings in the ODI series against Afghanistan. After getting out for 16 runs in the opening game, he made a comeback with 48 and 79 in the other two matches.

Kohli and Rohit are in the spotlight in the England vs India ODI series, as they are under scanner due to their age factor, and also the fact that youngsters have put their case forward with their performances. Unfortunately, both of them flopped in the 1st ODI against England at Edgbaston, getting out cheaply.

In the 1st ODI, England piled up 258/10 in the first innings with half-centuries by Joe Root (76*) and Liam Dawson (68). Indian pacers Gurnoor Brar, Jasprit Bumrah, and Prasidh Krishna were at their best with the ball, restricting the hosts at 80/5 inside 17 overs.

However, Root and Dawson’s 121-run stand for the seventh wicket helped England to make a comeback. With a low target at the front, Rohit and Kohli had a wonderful opportunity to showcase their might on England soil and lead India to victory. But both of them got out cheaply.

Sharma, who opened with Gill, could only score 11 runs off 21 balls before gifting his wicket to Sam Curran in the 8th over. He hit one four before getting caught by Harry Brook at mid-off.

Kohli became a victim of pacer Jofra Archer as got trapped in an LBW for just five runs off six deliveries with one four. Kohli shuffled right across on the flick and missed the straight delivery. He was given out by the on-field umpire and left the field without wasting a review.
