Rohit Sharma is the leading run-getter for Mumbai Indians in the IPL.

Rohit Sharma opened the innings for Mumbai Indians (MI) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on May 17, 2024 in Mumbai. And seeing the ‘Hitman’ coming out to bat, former India opener Wasim Jaffer made a serious statement.

Rohit Sharma has been a pillar of the MI batting lineup for years. He was bought by the MI franchise at the auction in 2010, but by then, Rohit was already an IPL winner, with his trophy win coming with Deccan Chargers in 2009.

With MI, Rohit Sharma took time to find his feet among legends like Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting, but everything changed when Rohit was named captain of the MI mid-tournament in IPL 2013.

He led the MI team to their first-ever IPL win and then won four more titles in 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020. MI became only the second team after Chennai Super Kings to successfully defend their title. Rohit Sharma was also the leading run-getter for Mumbai.

However, the last few years have been tumultuous for the MI franchise, with them failing to qualify for the playoffs in IPL 2021 and then finishing at the bottom of the points table in 2022.

We are seeing Rohit for the last time in Mumbai Indians jersey: Wasim Jaffer

One of the biggest changes was made in IPL 2024 by the MI management as they traded in Hardik Pandya from Gujarat Titans and removed Rohit Sharma from captaincy. Pandya was made MI captain, ending Rohit’s reign of leadership after a decade.

However, Hardik was not accepted as captain by the MI fans and reportedly by some of the players in the MI contingent as well. MI faltered in the IPL 2024, becoming the first team to be eliminated from the race for playoffs.

Rohit Sharma received huge support from MI fans, who booed Hardik Pandya wherever MI went to play and he was jeered ever louder when MI played at home in Mumbai. There are speculations about Rohit entering the IPL 2025 mega auction and moving to a new franchise.

Now Wasim Jaffer has also put fuel in the fire as he posted on X saying that Rohit Sharma playing for MI against LSG in their final league match of IPL 2024, might be the last time the veteran is wearing the MI jersey.
