Rohit Sharma breaks Eoin Morgan's record of captain with most sixes in international cricket

Rohit Sharma cracked three sixes in the first ODI match against Sri Lanka.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma, who recently announced his T20I retirement, made his return to the ODIs in style as he smashed the Sri Lankan bowlers all around the park during the opening fixture of the three-match ODI series against at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on August 2.

During his 58-run knock, which included three sixes, Rohit broke the record of former England captain Eoin Morgan for most sixes by a captain in international cricket.

Rohit, who was playing his first ODI since the heartbreaking defeat in the ICC World Cup 2023 final against Australia, was just two sixes away from reaching Morgan’s tally of 233 sixes captain in ODIs.

Rohit went on top of the list after smashing his third six of the innings against Sri Lanka.

  1. Rohit Sharma (IND) – 234 sixes
  2. Eoin Morgan (ENG) – 233 sixes
  3. MS Dhoni (IND) – 211 sixes
  4. Ricky Ponting (AUS/ICC) – 171 sixes
  5. Brendon McCullum (NZ) – 170 sixes

How did Rohit Sharma perform against Sri Lanka in the first ODI?

Hosts Sri Lanka managed to reach a respectable total of 230/8 in 50 overs with the help of half-centuries from opener Pathum Nissanka and lower-middle-order batter Dunith Wellalage.

While chasing 231, Indian captain Rohit smashed 58 runs off 47 balls, including seven fours and three sixes. The Indian opener was dismissed by spinner Dunith Wellalage in the 15th over of the innings.

At the time of writing, India are 130/3 after 23 overs.
